Beginning Saturday, Oct. 22, the city of Jackson has contracted with United Waste to pick up bagged leaves curbside this autumn. With some minor modifications compared to last season, this year’s bagged leaf pickup program will save the city enough money to perform one full round of street sweeping before the snow flies, Department of Public Works Director Todd Knepper said. This year, residents are required to use their own biodegradable paper bags for leaf pickup, after numerous resi- dents complained last season that they were required to use city-provided bags. In addition, the DPW garage will no longer accept loose leaf dropoffs. The city has been split into three sections for leaf collection, with the contractor beginning the leaf collection at 6 a.m. each scheduled day. Section 1, the Southeast Section, is bordered by E. North Street to the north and Cooper Street, S. Jackson Street and W. Michigan Avenue to the west. Section 2, the North Section, is bordered by Cooper Street to the east and E. North Street and W.
