Lumen attacks on the air and ground, rolls past Western 49-14

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson — Three weeks into the season, this was a one-win team struggling to find balance on offense and wondering just where the 2016 season was headed.   Four weeks later, well, all seems just fine with the Lumen Christi football program.   The Titans picked up their fourth win in as many tries Friday, starting quick and never easing off the gas in a 49-14 win at Western.   “We took care of business,” coach Herb Brogan said afterwards. “And truthfully, I thought it was our best defensive effort of the year. Out defensive coaches did a great job getting our guys ready, and then they went out and executed.”   It was the offense that got things going, though, as the Titans took the opening drive and marched 76 yards, needing just one pass, before Kyle Minder scored on a 3-yard run.   Roughly four minutes later Troy Kutcha got involved, firing a screen pass to Jacob Lathers.   Lathers did the rest on a 37-yard touchdown reception for a 14-0 lead after one quarter.   Western made things interesting at the 7:50 mark of the second, though, when Steele Fortress hit…

Lumen Christi alum Maddalena picked for MIAA men’s golf sportsmanship award

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – After a fourth place finish in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s 36-hole event to close the fall season, Albion College is left wishing there were more rounds to play.   Despite a 632 total in the two-day event, Albion finished two strokes behind Adrian College in the chase for fifth place in the final league standings after six rounds. The Bulldogs accumulated 1,885 strokes in the 108 holes played this fall, while the Britons total stood at 1,887.   “It hurts to fall two strokes behind Adrian,” Coach Jordan McArleton said. “It is a good reminder to the players that every stroke counts. We were rounding into the right form, but there is a lot to build on moving forward.”   Matt Falls and Connor Maddalena tied for 14th on the individual leaderboard with rounds of 79 and 77 for 36-hole totals of 156.   Justin Leeds turned in Albion’s low score Saturday with a round of 76. He had a 158 total for the weekend.   Jim Chapman completed Albion’s team score with rounds of 79 and 84 for a 163 total.   More importantly than the team finish was Maddalena’s selection for the MIAA’s…

Hackensaw Boys to Play Affinity Series at JSO

On Friday, October 14th, Hackensaw Boys will play a concert at Weatherwax Hall (The Wax), the Jackson Symphony Orchestra’s Performing Arts Center located at 215 W. Michigan Ave. in downtown Jackson as part of the Jackson Symphony’s Affinity Series of Concerts. Tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at the door and are available at www.jacksonsymphony.org, or by calling 517-782-3221. Hackensaw Boys' new record, Charismo, feels like the zenith release of the band’s 17 years, gathering their diverse life experiences and myriad of roots influences, and crystallizing them into a magnum opus on the Hackensaw way of being. Traditional Appalachian and Delta music lay the groundwork, but it’s injected with a heavy dose of the contemporary, good-times-roll kind of spit and vinegar the band has become known for over the years. Long known for their raucous live shows, the Hackensaws have been a home for dozens of musicians over the years, but have steadfastly endured through life’s many changes. With Charismo, the Boys don’t let down on providing their signature ever-present, feel-good energy. It’s the kind of intangible presence that reminds us of our connection to other people and to our history, to the idea that we are a part of…

Jackson College Hosts Human Trafficking Forum

Jackson College invites college and community members to learn more about the shocking realities of human trafficking at a campus forum Wednesday, Oct. 12 from 2-4 p.m. in Bert Walker Hall Community Room 1 & 2 (144 & 145). Human Trafficking: Exploring Modern Day Slavery in America will shine a light on a problem that remains hidden. It is a crime involving the exploitation of someone for the purposes of compelled labor or a commercial sex act through the use of force, fraud or coercion. Trafficking affects individuals across the world, including here in the United States, according to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center. It is commonly regarded as one of the most pressing human rights issues of our time. Speakers for this forum will include Congressman Tim Walberg, Jackson College President Dr. Daniel Phelan, and Director of Multicultural Affairs Lee Hampton. Panelists will include: ·                     Derick Dobies, Jackson County Commissioner; ·                     Matt Heins, Jackson City Police Chief; ·                     Steve Rand, Jackson County Sheriff; ·                     Lt. Kyle Bowman, Michigan State Police; ·                     Jeremy Norwood, Spring Arbor University faculty. This event is free and open to all.
