Grass Lake takes on Springport in top game of conference clash

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Grass Lake — Both teams have secured a playoff spot and locked up a conference title.   Both coaches spoke about how much is still on the line.   That was the resounding theme Wednesday as Grass Lake’s Randy Cole and Springport’s Matt Schwartzkopf talked about Friday night’s tilt.   The teams are both 7-1.   Grass Lake won the Cascades Conference title, while Springport claimed a share of the Big Eight’s crown with Homer and Concord.   “But there’s still plenty on the line,” Cole said. “When you look at hosting a playoff game, for example, that’s huge.”   “Playoff points are huge,” Schwartzkopf said.   But he took it a step further.   “Since we started the crossover games, we haven’t won a game and the conference hasn’t won a championship,” Schwartzkopf added. “So there is a lot on the line with this game. We have a chance to host a playoff game, which is big for us.”   Either team, at 8-1, would likely host in the first, and maybe even second, round of the state playoffs.   But first things first.   “That’s always a good team,” Schwartzkopf said of…

Michigan Center can clinch playoff spot with victory at Quincy

Photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Michigan Center — Win and in.   It’s as simple and as complicated as that for the Michigan Center football team.   Last weekend the Cardinals were on life support, sitting at 4-3 on the season and taking on an undefeated Grass Lake team everyone in their right mind would have picked to improve to 8-0.   “It was an upset in a lot of people’s eyes,” Center coach Troy Allen said with a laugh. “We found a way to beat a great program. I think there’s been a great rivalry there, and for us, it was do or die. We needed it.”   Center got it by a 24-22 final, earning the fifth win of the season while setting up Thursday’s road game at Quincy for a chance to automatically qualify for the state playoffs.   “We started the year wanting to win the conference and make the playoffs,” Allen said. “We didn’t take care of one of those, but now we have a chance at the other.”   The season started rough for the Cardinals, who were just 1-2 after three weeks. But their 4-1 mark…
