Lumen Christi’s Herb Brogan Named JTV Sports 2016 Coach of the Year

photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson — He will point and gear credit to his players, and that much has come to be expected. But when looking back at the 2016 football season, there’s a fair amount of credit due to the man guiding the Lumen Christi ship. From the choppy waters of the first three weeks to the seemingly smooth sailing down the stretch to the most important navigating come playoff time. When it came to area football teams this fall, none were better than the Titans. When it came to sideline generals leading those teams, the same can be said about Herb Brogan, the JTV 2016 Coach of the Year. “We had a real nice group of kids coming in,” Brogan said, looking back on the season. “They were young and inexperienced and opened against a (Grand Rapids West Catholic) team that was loaded. Those are as much a part of sports as talk at the water cooler, fantasy lineups and home-team swag. So, now nearly a week from the end of the Lumen Christi football team’s historic run to Detroit, and a Division 6 state title, the question begs to be asked. What if? What could have been? What if the 1-2 start the Titans got off to was a small leak in a sinking season? What could have been if two losses in three weeks snatched the spirit from a team that began the year with such high expectations? How did he keep things together, and get out of such a low point? Coach Herb Brogan was asked that slightly after celebrating with his team, and the D-6 trophy. He offered a subtle smile. “I don’t think we were ever very low,” he answered. “We were struggling. We were young.” Lumen opened the year with a 30-13 loss against Grand Rapids West Catholic that Brogan referred to as embarrassing Wets Catholic, it should be noted, finished the year 12-2…
