Round 1 tonight in Jackson vs. Lumen boys hoops

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson — With the holiday’s fast approaching, spirits high and a merry cheer in the air, why not let two long-time, and sometimes bitter, rivals square off for the first time this winter on the hard wood?   It’s Jackson and Lumen Christi boys basketball, and Tuesday night, the first round of the 2016-17 seasons officially tips at 7 p.m.   “It’s the city championship, always a big game,” Jackson coach Dan Crowley said Monday. “No matter what, this is a big one.”   “You’re playing Jackson High, so you have to be ready,” Lumen coach Pat Neville said. “That may be the best team we see all year, so our approach has to be on a full, 32 minutes of solid basketball.”   Both teams are looking to get on track.   Jackson started the year with a 54-47 loss to Battle Creek Central, followed by an 82-65 setback to East Lansing.   The Vikings got their first win of the season last Wednesday in an 80-61 victory over Lansing Sexton.   Lumen started its season with three losses in a row before upending Northwest 58-44 last Friday.   But now, all attention…

NASCAR Unveils New Logo and Series Sponsor

NASCAR today unveiled a new official brand identity which will replace the bar mark used by the sanctioning body since 1976. The announcement was made in conjunction with the news that Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series™ will be the new name of the sport's premier series beginning January 1, 2017. The new brand mark and Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series mark, which prominently features the iconic Monster Energy logo, together represent a new era in NASCAR. "Our new NASCAR mark is modern, timeless, and embraces the heritage of our sport," said Jill Gregory, NASCAR senior vice president and chief marketing officer. "It was important for us to recognize our history and implement a piece of each previous mark in the new design. Our goal was to evolve the sport's visual identity to make it concise, relevant and functional, while respecting and maintaining the unique qualities of the original mark." The NASCAR brand identity has been in development since early 2016 as part of a broader effort to refresh the NASCAR brand. It was designed to pay tribute to the storied history of NASCAR, incorporating elements of all four previous marks since the company’s inaugural season of 1948. “We are excited as…

Spring Arbor Men’s Soccer head coach Nathan Miller named NSCAA NAIA Regional Coach of the Year

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University head men’s soccer coach Nathan Miller has been rewarded for leading the Cougars to one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2016 as he was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NAIA Mideast Region Coach of the Year.   “It is a well-deserved honor for Coach Miller,” said SAU Athletic Director Ryan Cottingham. “He has worked extremely hard to build a highly successful program on and off the field. Nate is very good and I am proud of his intentional approach to being a missional coach.”   Miller earned his first career NSCAA recognition by guiding SAU to a 15-4-4 record and a Crossroads League championship – the team’s first conference title since 2012. The Cougars also made their fifth all-time appearance in the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship and, after upsetting No. 11 Bryan College in the Opening Round, advanced to the second round of the national tournament for the first time since 1977.   Spring Arbor ended the season ranked No. 15 in the NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, the highest ranking for the program in nearly 40 years. The team had a…

Henry Ford Allegience Health to Build New Tower, Add 66 Patient Rooms

Henry Ford Allegiance Health announced today a hospital expansion project that will add 66 private rooms for patients. The three-story, 59,000 square-feet Patient Tower will be built above the Henry Ford Allegiance Heart & Vascular Center. Construction on the $45 million project begins in February 2017, by the Christman Group. Completion is expected in mid-2018. Since some semi-private rooms will be converted to private rooms in the process, the hospital’s overall bed count will not change. The project represents the first major investment since the partnership with Henry Ford Health System was finalized, less than a year ago. “One of the most frequent requests from our patients has been to increase the number of private rooms to create a quieter, more healing environment,” said Henry Ford Allegiance President and CEO Georgia Fojtasek. “This expansion reflects our dedication to being a truly patient-centered health system. It is also part of our strategic plan for strength and growth, during changing times for the health care industry.” Bob Riney, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Henry Ford Health System, also expressed confidence in the expansion project. “We know there are big challenges ahead for our industry and many hospitals are undergoing layoffs…
