Grybauskas ready to lead, welcomes challenge of rebuilding Northwest football

By Mike Moore                                 Photo Courtesy of Northwest High School Staff Writer   Jackson — In the eight years prior to Adam Grybauskas’ arrival at Central Lake, the Trojans’ football program never won more than five games in a single season, never reached the state playoffs and had a 34-38 record.   In the eight years prior to Grybauskas’ arrival at Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port, the Lakers had two winning seasons, two trips the playoffs and a program record of 32-42.   In 15 years, combined with those programs, Grybauskas went 97-54 and reached the state playoffs nine different times.   Needless to say, he’s no stranger to transforming a struggling program into a winner.   On Monday, he accepted that challenge once again when he was officially announced as the next football coach at Northwest.   “We’re excited, we really are,” Grybauskas said Tuesday afternoon. “This is an awesome move for us. To come to a bigger school with some new facilities, it’s great. It’s going to be different, coming from smaller schools where we had to beg players to come out, to this, where we’ll…

Elmer Hitt Named Acting Director of Police & Fire Services

Following the retirement of Jackson Director of Police and Fire Services Matthew Heins, his second in command Elmer Hitt was recently named acting director. Currently serving as the deputy director, Hitt will oversee all director duties and serve in the interim until such time a permanent appointment is made to the position vacated by Heins. Heins retired from his position to become Security Manager for Henry Ford Allegiance Health. He will lead a team of security officers who monitor the health system’s properties in the Jackson area. Heins began his career as a cadet in the police department in 1989. He was hired as police chief in 2007 before the position of director of police and fire services was created in 2012 - a position he was subsequently appointed. Hitt was named acting director Jan. 6.  Hitt, along with Heins, has served the Jackson Police Department for his entire career. City Manager Patrick Burtch has said there are qualified internal applicants for the permanent position which he hopes to fill in the next few weeks. Elmer Hitt told JTV he is an applicant for the position.

Henry Ford Allegiance Health Earns “A” Grade for Patient Safety

New Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, which assign A, B, C, D and F letter grades to hospitals nationwide and provide the most complete picture of patient safety in the U.S., were announced by The Leapfrog Group, a national patient safety watchdog. This most recent ranking indicates that Henry Ford Allegiance Health was one of 844 hospitals to receive an “A,” ranking it among the safest hospitals in the United States. Overall, Henry Ford Allegiance Health has received an A with every ranking—a total of ten times--since the Hospital Safety Grade was first initiated in Spring of 2012. Henry Ford Allegiance Health is one of only three hospitals in Michigan to accomplish this, and among the 72 graded hospitals that have achieved this longstanding recognition nationwide. “Protecting patients from harm is the most important charge for any hospital,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We recognize and appreciate ‘A’ hospitals’ vigilance and continued dedication to keeping their patients safe.” Developed under the guidance of an Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice…
