Jackson County Parks Update on Splash Pad and Bike Share Station

Preparations are underway for installation of a bicycle sharing station at the trail head of Falling Waters Trail at Weatherwax Drive in Jackson.  The trail is a popular destination for cyclists and  connects Concord to the Martin L. King Equality Trail that runs through the City of Jackson. In April a kiosk will be installed that will initially house six bikes available for rental.  Riders will swipe a credit card and be charged rates that have not yet been announced.  The program is modeled after similar bike share programs in Ann Arbor and Battle Creek, which sell day passes, memberships and offer hourly rates.  The kiosk and bicycles have been purchased through local bike shop On Two Wheels with a $35,000 grant from the Hurst Foundation.  Through advertising on the bikes and rental fees, the program should be self-sustaining according to Kyle Lewis, Jackson County Parks Manager for Facilities & Events. The program is part of B-Cycle, a service of Trek Bicycle Corporation.  B-Cycle is currently in 40 communities throughout the United States.  Jackson will be the third Michigan city, joining Ann Arbor and Battle Creek. The six bikes are made by Trek specifically for ride sharing and rental programs. …

Western Basketball Flexes Muscle Down the Stretch, Claims First Conference Title Since 1995

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson — This was talked about in the offseason, the main goal the Western basketball team set forth. Ryan Mulnix and his guys spoke about it at length during the regular season, reaffirming their ambition to bring a conference title back to the program that had, for so long, gone without one. And then, in the days leading up to Friday night’s road trip to Northwest, Mulnix said he was tired of the talk, tired of the hope and mission. Friday night, the Panthers’ sideline general remained somewhat speechless. “I don’t know. I don’t even know if I can describe this right now,” Mulnix, struggling for words outside his team’s locker room, said following a 52-34 victory and co-conference championship. “It was a lot of hard work to do this. The coaching staff. The players, they are the ones that do everything.” Western entered the game needing a win to clinch at least a share of the I-8 title, an accomplishment the program hadn’t done since 1995. The nerves, the tension, the pressure, whatever it was, took its toll early on. Western struggled to get much of anything going, scoring just three points in the…
