Jackson College Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Jackson College will host a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at noon Thursday, Sept. 14 on the Potter Center Patio. Visitors can sample great cuisine and listen to music from Los Vaqueros, The Cowboys. This free event is open to students and the community. In 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim a week in September as National Hispanic Heritage Week. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a month-long celebration (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15), honoring Hispanic heritage. The date Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18. During this time, America celebrates the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. According to this Census, 57 million people or 18 percent of the U.S. population are of Hispanic or Latino origin. It is the nation’s second-fastest-growing racial or ethnic group after Asians. Symposium to Explore Being Civil

Be part of the discussion when Jackson College hosts a college and community symposium on the topic of civility, Monday, Sept. 18 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in Bert Walker Hall, Rooms 144 & 145. Following high-profile events in the news, in politics and across the country on college campuses, Jackson College President Daniel J. Phelan called together a new task force earlier this year, Lux et Veritas, or light and truth. Lux et Veritas members are called to promote an inclusive, civil, diverse and secure campus for all students, staff, faculty and visitors. In deciding how to go about their charge, members have decided to host four symposia a year – two in fall, and two in winter. This first symposium will explore the concept of civility, while another in November will explore inclusion. A panel comprised of faculty, staff and students will each have five minutes to address the question, “Why be civil?” Afterward, audience members will be invited to question or remark on the topic with the panel members. Professor Anthony Cleveland, psychology, will serve as moderator and will discuss the evolution of social morals. Other panelists will include Mary Jo Kennedy, student judicial officer and director of criminal…
