Cross Country State Title a Thing to Celebrate for Hanover-Horton

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Horton — It’s been nearly two weeks, but a celebration like this will last a lifetime. It was last weekend the Hanover-Horton boys cross country team went to Brooklyn in search of a state championship. It was last weekend the Comets went to the Michigan International Speedway and got everything they wanted — and more. “The kids really put it together,” coach Dean Blackledge said of his team’s state title. “When the race was over, we were all standing around as they were posting scores. When I saw inside the window and where we were going to be, I jumped and screamed. It really was bedlam for 10 minutes, or so. It was just awesome.” Hanover finished the Division 3 race on Nov. 4 with a team score of 122. Caro was just behind with 128, while Holland Black River had 149. “The last 40 meters was the difference,” Blackledge said. “The guys from Caro came out of nowhere, and really, when I didn’t think we had a chance, our guys found a way to pull it off.” Landon Melling led the Comets, placing third overall in a time of 15:54.8. Bo Shepherd was eighth…

Cloudy Today, Rain Developing Tonight

Our next storm system will bring rain to the area tonight into Saturday. Isolated thunderstorms are possible near and south of I-94 Saturday morning as the surface low tracks just south I-94. The track of the storm will keep southwest Michigan out of the truly warm air so most locations will have highs in 40s. Once the storm passes to our east the cold air comes Saturday night. During that time some lingering light rain showers will change to flurries.    Today:  Mostly cloudy. Highs in the mid 40s. South winds 5 to 15 mph with gusts to around 25 mph. Tonight Rain showers. Lows in the lower 40s. South winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts to around 35 mph. Chance of rain 100 percent. Saturday Rain showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms until midday, then rain showers in the afternoon. Highs around 50. Southwest winds 5 to 10 mph increasing to north 15 to 20 mph with gusts to around 35 mph in the afternoon. Chance of rain 90 percent. Saturday Night Rain showers, possibly mixed with snow showers in the evening. Lows in the lower 30s. Northwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to around…
