Malcolm X’s Daughter to Speak at Jackson College

Explore the life of Michigan-born civil rights leader Malcolm X when Jackson College hosts a Reading Month Community Event coming March 22 at 6 p.m. in Bert Walker Hall, Rooms 144 & 145. Residents and readers in Jackson and the surrounding area are invited to join with others across the state in the Great Michigan Read, featuring the title “X: A Novel,” a fictionalized tale of the Malcolm X written by his daughter, Ilyasah Shabazz, and Kekla Magoon. Shabazz will be keynote speaker for the evening and share “Reflecting on the Life of Malcolm X.” She is the third daughter of Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz and is an educator, activist, motivational speaker, and author. She promotes higher education for at-risk youth, interfaith dialogue to build bridges between cultures for young leaders of the world, and she participates on international humanitarian delegations. The recipient of numerous awards, her latest book, “X: A Novel,” is the winner of a 2016 NAACP Image Award. “This honor is especially important to me. It is always a high honor to have one’s work recognized by a distinguished organization such as Michigan Humanities Council, and to be an inspiration to readers throughout Michigan,” Shabazz said. Today is a great day for a car wash at Kelly Express Car Wash.  Clean off the salt and dirt of winter! Fair weather will continue today across Lower Michigan with a good deal of sunshine and very warm temperatures for February. Normal highs today range from 33 to 37 degrees, but we will be 20 degrees warmer than that. Readings should top out in the mid to upper 50s. A stationary front sagging into the area from the northwest tonight and Wednesday will bring scattered rain showers late tonight and tomorrow. A low traversing the Southern Great Lakes region will bring rain Wednesday night that will try to change over to snow on Thursday.
