Hanover girls ready to host districts, seeking first title in 18 years

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Horton — Andrew Birch remembers the last time the Hanover-Horton girls basketball team won a district title.   “I remember it very well, actually,” the Comets’ coach said simply. “I was still in high school. It’s been a long, long time.”   Too long for Birch and his program’s liking.   But on Monday evening, the Comets can take the first step in changing all that.   “We’ve had our share of ups and downs, but we know we can compete with anybody,” Birch said about the district tournament, which begins tonight across the state. “Now we have to go out and do what we know we can.”   The Comets get things going at tonight at 7 p.m., playing host to Lumen Christi in a Class C opener.   “That’s a tough team, and I promise you this, they are better than the record shows,” Birch said of Lumen, which ended the regular season 4-16. “That’s a team used to tough competition and tough games.”   Hanover, which closed the regular season 13-7, defeated Lumen 62-53 on Jan. 30.   “They have some good height down low, which is going to be tough…

High pressure will drift through the Great Lakes region today and tonight bringing dry weather and mainly clear skies. Highs today will reach the mid 40s to around 50 degrees. Southerly winds kicking in tonight will keep lows in most areas near or slightly above freezing. Highs on Tuesday will be well above normal (roughly 20 degrees above normals) with highs pushing well into the 50s. Low clouds and small chances for rain showers are expected on Wednesday. Highs will remain above normal on Wednesday in the upper 40s to low 50s. A widespread rain is expected on Thursday with the potential for some heavier rain across Southwest Lower Michigan. Jackson College Winter Film Series.  Explore filmmaking and enjoy movies from classic to contemporary with Jackson College’s 42nd Annual Winter Film Series.  The Winter Film Series is held annually at the Michigan Theatre in downtown Jackson as part of the College’s English 210 Films as Literature class. Wind Advisory Until 2 PM This Afternoon

A WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 2 PM EST THIS AFTERNOON.  Wind gusts to 50 mph are expected into early afternoon.      A rapidly deepening storm system will bring very strong winds with some gusts near 50 mph this morning into early this afternoon. High pressure follows for tonight into Tuesday. That will bring well above normal temperatures to the area by Tuesday with highs in the mid to upper 50s. Then the combination of stalled frontal system and low coming out of the Southern Plains will bring showers Wednesday but a steady rain, possibly heavy at times, Thursday. That may end as some light snow Thursday night or Friday morning. There may be enough rain with this to cause additional river rises. Today Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 46. Breezy, with a west southwest wind 22 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph. Tonight Mostly clear, with a low around 30. Flood Warning Continued

FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR JACKSON.     Our next rain event moves through the area tonight with a few isolated thunderstorms, the heaviest rainfall misses us to the south and northwest. Enough cold air follows this system so that we may see some flurries or sprinkles during the mid morning hours of Sunday then skies should clear by mid afternoon. Mostly sunny and warmer than normal conditions are expected Monday into Tuesday. A weak cold front may bring showers later Tuesday into Wednesday. Then a system from the southern plains moves into the area to bring more rain, later Wednesday into Thursday. This may be enough to cause more flooding issues. Today A 20 percent chance of showers after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 39. East wind 6 to 13 mph. Tonight Showers before 1am, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm between 1am and 4am, then showers likely after 4am.
