Jackson Young Professionals Announce “Bright Walls” Downtown Mural Festival

Jackson Young Professionals (JxnYP)  has announced the creation of a week-long mural festival, “Bright Walls” to be presented in Downtown Jackson and hosted by JxnYP.  This free event will run from October 3-10, and welcomes 10 mural artists from around the world to help create a new reason to visit Downtown Jackson. Several buildings have been identified in a small area in the neighborhood of Pearl and Jackson Streets.  The building owners have agreed to have their buildings serve as canvases for the project.  The $100,000 project is being funded by sponsorships and donations secured by JxnYP. “We wanted to make a meaningful contribution to Downtown Jackson and leave a legacy of the excitement we feel for the community. Inspired by Murals in the Market in Detroit, we are on a mission to create a similar event in our city,” says Clay McAndrews, Marketing Committee Chair of JxnYP. “We partnered with Jeremiah Britton, a mural artist and Jackson native who now lives in New York, to help bring this project to life. High quality artists that have participated…

Alcohol Compliance Checks Set to Begin

Area law enforcement agencies, in partnership with Drug Free Jackson (formerly known as the Jackson County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition) are conducting alcohol compliance checks this summer to ensure retailers aren’t selling alcohol to minors. Vendors, such as restaurants, retail stores, and golf courses are all eligible to be checked.  “Retailers have a responsibility to ensure they comply with the rules of the Michigan Liquor Control Commission as well as state and local laws to prevent the sale to those under the age of 21,” explains Elmer Hitt, Director of Police and Fire Services, for the City of Jackson. “Participating in the alcohol compliance checks brings a level of enforcement, awareness, and education that is necessary in order to reduce alcohol use by minors.”  A compliance check is conducted in the following manner: An underage individual, under supervision of a law enforcement officer, attempts to buy alcohol at an alcohol vendor. If the employee making the sale doesn’t verify the person’s age, and therefore sells to a minor, both the employee and the business will be cited in accordance with the Michigan Liquor Control Code of 1998. Selling to minors is a misdemeanor, resulting in monetary fines and possibly loss of…

Mostly Cloudy with Chance of Showers

The big story is the cooler weather Friday into Sunday as one of the stronger cold fronts in over a month comes through the area on Thursday. Highs will mostly be in the 70s, even inland during this time frame. Low could dip into the 40s over northern areas Friday and Saturday morning. Meanwhile a cold front just west of Lake Michigan early this morning will track across Lower Michigan today. That will clear out the clouds as it moves through but it will also enhance the chance for showers and thunderstorms across the area. The chance for seeing rain is greatest early to mid afternoon over eastern sections. The cold front coming through the area Thursday may have some showers and thunderstorms with it but precipitation amounts will be limited by the dry air that will be in place as it comes through the area. Today A chance of showers before 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 2pm and 5pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5pm. Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 80. Calm wind becoming west northwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is…

Scattered Showers

Our slow moving storm system will continue to sink to the southeast through the day today. This will allow for scattered showers and a few isolated thunderstorms to continue into this afternoon. Highs will mostly be between 75 and 80. Tonight we will see see mostly cloudy skies and only a slight chance of showers. Those showers, if they happen would be from the moisture from the east coast system that may be pulled as far back as west Michigan tonight. This will result in holding the cloud cover in the area into Tuesday morning before a cold front comes through and clears it all away. With more sunshine it will actually be warmer in the afternoon behind the cold front than ahead of it. Highs should be in the mid 80s Tuesday and Wednesday. Another stronger cold front comes through late Wednesday or early Thursday. There only a low chance of showers with passage of that cold front. Expect mostly sunny skies and slightly cooler weather Friday and Saturday. Today A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 5pm. Cloudy, with a high near 74. East northeast wind 7 to 14 mph. Tonight A 20 percent chance…
