Greenwood, MLK, Franklin Construction Updates

(June 29, 2020 10:37 AM) The City of Jackson Department of Engineering reports construction is nearing completion on Greenwood Avenue and the traffic circle surrounding Austin Blair Park.  The department anticipates the street will be opened to traffic later this week. Last week, the top course of asphalt was paved on the street legs into and out of the traffic circle around Austin Blair Park. Friday, a crew was on-site adjusting the top of manholes and valves in the asphalt sections up to match the top of the new pavement. Early this week, a subcontractor is scheduled to arrive to seal the joints in the concrete pavement in the traffic circle. Another subcontractor is scheduled to arrive to put down lane stripes, stop bars and arrows on the new pavement. Once these two tasks are complete, the streets will be opened to traffic. This is scheduled to happen before the end of the week. Red Cross Blood Drives. The American Red Cross is now testing all blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The antibody test used by the Red Cross is authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to the coronavirus, regardless of whether they developed symptoms.  At the same time, there continues to be an urgent need for blood donations after hospital demand for blood products increased in recent weeks. The attached news release provides more detail about the antibody testing, how the Red Cross is helping protect the health and safety of donors and staff at blood drives, and why there is an urgent need for donors right now. Bunch Claims First Lyle Ambs Golf Championship

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Jackson High School soon-to-be senior Justin Bunch won his first Lyle Ambs Memorial Golf Tournament championship on Sunday at Ella Sharp Park Golf Course. Bunch defeated defending champion Tom Butterfield 2-and-1 in the semifinal match and defeated three-time champion Mark Kurzynowski 6-and-5 in the final of the championship flight on Sunday. He may have become the youngest winner of the Lyle Ambs. Dave Hill won the tournament as a 17-year-old in 1954, according to records on the Jackson Golf Committee. Bunch is only 16 years old. “Everybody who I played in the Lyle Ambs tournament played good,” Bunch said. “It took the best that I had to win the tournament.” Bunch was 2 down in his semifinal match against Butterfield after nine holes. But he turned it on the back nine to win 2-and-1. In the championship match against Mark Kurzynowski, Bunch played well again ending the tournament on hole 13. (June 28, 2020 3:45 PM) Michigan reported 252 coronavirus (COVID-19) positive test cases today, with the state reported total now at 63,261. The State of Michigan is reporting 4 COVID-19-related death today, bringing the state total to 5,911. State Cumulative Total of Recovered COVID-19 Cases (as of 6/26/2020): 51,099.  This information is updated daily at 3 p.m., with COVID-19 results included as of 10 a.m.

Jackson County Cumulative Report: 473 COVID-19 Positive Cases and 29 Deaths

(June 28, 2020 12:14 PM) The Jackson County Health Department released the COVID-19 positive numbers for Jackson County.  As of 12 PM today, there are 473 positive cases (cumulative), and 29 deaths (cumulative)*.     There are no new cases since yesterday’s report.  No new deaths have been reported since June 7. Cumulative recovered** patients (cumulative): 417 (updated weekly, as of June 26). The Michigan Department of Corrections is reporting as of 4:30 PM Thursday, June 25, there are 1,587 confirmed positive cases are at Jackson facilities, 156 Confirmed Positive Jackson staff. As of 6 AM on Wednesday, June 24, there are 2 individuals with positive COVID-19 results who are inpatients at Henry Ford Allegiance Health.  *These numbers do not reflect any cases or deaths identified through Michigan Department of Corrections.  Their numbers are listed under a separate category "Others" for the Michigan Statistics. **Recovered is defined as the number of persons with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis who are alive 30 days post-onset (or referral date if onset is not available). Kurzynowski Makes Golf Adjustments for Ambs Wins Saturday

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports An adjustment to his putting grip and loft angles on his irons paid dividend for Jackson golfer Mark Kurzynowski. The three-time winner of the Lyle Ambs Memorial Golf Tournament won a pair of matches on Saturday against younger players to advance to the semifinals of the championship bracket on Sunday. Kurzynowski will be joined by defending champion Tom Butterfield, Justin Bunch, and Mike Brockie on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. Winners of the semifinal matches will face one another for the prestigious tournament finals beginning at approximately 11:30 a.m. Kurzynowski shot a 74 last week during qualifying to become the 15th seed in a 16-player field. “I played pretty good last week, but had a couple of bad breaks,” Kurzynowski said. “I had all week to work on my game.” He also had a chance to change the loft on his irons and made a grip change on his putter. It appeared as if medalist Riley Hestwood would make those changes by Kurzynowski null and void in the opening match. Hestwood was 4 up through 11 holes before Kurzynowski got hot.
