January 18 NAACP Event: MLK Day of Service Celebration and Virtual Event.  The Jackson County Branch NAACP presents the annual event from Second Baptist Church virtually.  The theme, “Standing on the Front Line” will be presented through speakers, musicians, youth leaders and the keynote, “Color of Change” delivered by a member of the branch.  Join us as we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by building partnerships, strengthening communities, bridging barriers, and helping those in need.  To participate, visit facebook.com/JANCOBRNAACP and via Zoom. MDOC Cumulative Report: 4,369 Confirmed Positive Cases at Jackson Facilities, 552 Confirmed Positive Jackson Staff

(January 17, 2021 10:44 AM) The Michigan Department of Corrections is reporting as of 6 PM January 15, there are 23,542 confirmed positive COVID-19 cumulative cases at facilities throughout the state.  Of that statewide total, 4,369 of the confirmed positive cases are at Jackson facilities.    Throughout the state corrections system, there are currently 3,612 active cases. In Jackson, there are 1,712 confirmed positive COVID-19 cases at Charles E. Egeler Reception and Guidance Center,  at 1,214 Cooper Street Correctional Facility, 26 at Duane Waters Health Center, 900 at G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility, and 517 at Parnall Correctional Facility.   All numbers are cumulative. Among staff, there are a total of 3,253 COVID-19 positive cases statewide.  In Jackson, there are 181 confirmed positive COVID-19 cases among employees at Charles E. Egeler Reception and Guidance Center, 152 at Cooper Street Correctional Facility, 108 at G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility, 4 at Jackson Regional Warehouse, 3 at Jackson Regional Office, 2 at Jackson Training Center and 102 at Parnall Correctional Facility.  All numbers are cumulative. There have been a total of 125 deaths (statewide) of prisoners who had tested positive for COVID-19, 28 of those deaths were among prisoners at Jackson facilities.   …

Spring Arbor Men’s Basketball Cruises in Return To the Court

(January 16, 2021 8:09 PM) For the first time since December 5, the Spring Arbor University men’s basketball team got back on the court. Over the last month, SAU had to cancel multiple games and stop practicing due to COVID-19, but head coach Ryan Cottingham and the Cougars were ready for their long-awaited return, going on the road and defeating Adrian College 78-60 on Saturday.   Adrian led 12-8 in the early stages, but Spring Arbor used an 18-3 run to take a double-digit lead.  The Bulldogs were able to get within three, 28-25, before halftime, but the Cougars broke the game open in the second half. A barrage of 3-pointers over a three-minute span, including two from Connor Cottingham, turned an eight-point game into a 20-point SAU advantage. Brandon Durnell recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Daniel Cluster finished with 15 points while Joshua Laman had a career-high 11. Michigan Reports 1,932 Coronavirus Cases Today, State Total Now 535,534

(January 16, 2021 3:51 PM) Michigan reported 1,932 coronavirus (COVID-19) positive test cases today, with the state reported total now at 535,534. Michigan is reporting 103* COVID-19-related deaths today with the state total at 13,804. *The deaths announced today includes 90 deaths identified during a Vital Records review. See cumulative data page for more information. State Cumulative Total of Recovered COVID-19 Cases (as of 1/15/21): 442,408. This information is updated Monday through Saturday at 3 p.m., with COVID-19 results included as of 10 a.m.  Monday reports include Sunday data.

MDHHS Identifies First Michigan Case of New COVID-19 Variant, B.1.1.7. in Washtenaw County

(January 16, 2021 3:46 PM) The first Michigan case of new COVID-19 variant, B.1.1.7. was identified in an adult female living in Washtenaw County by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Bureau of Laboratories today. The person recently traveled to the United Kingdom, where this variant originated. Close contacts of this individual have been identified and are in quarantine. At this time two new cases have been identified from close contacts with the person, but it is not known if they are infected with the variant. B.1.1.7. is believed to be more contagious, but there has been no indication that it affects the clinical outcomes or disease severity compared to the SARS-CoV-2 virus that has been circulating across the United States for months. However, a higher rate of transmission could increase the number of people who need to be hospitalized or who lose their lives to COVID-19 should the new variant begin circulating widely in Michigan. To date, the virus has been identified in at least 16 other states and jurisdictions in the U.S. This is the only known case in Michigan at this time, however it is possible that there are more that have not been identified…

Jackson County Cumulative Report: 8,279 COVID-19 Positive Cases and 188 Deaths

(January 16, 2021 12:00 PM) The Jackson County Health Department released the COVID-19 positive numbers for Jackson County.  As of 12 PM today, there are 8,279 positive cases (cumulative), and 188 deaths (cumulative)*.     There are 32 new cases and 2 new deaths since yesterday’s report.  Cumulative recovered, as of January 16, 2020:  6,661** The cumulative numbers posted on Mondays include the data from Sunday and Monday.  Recovered numbers are being posted as received. The Michigan Department of Corrections is reporting as of 6:50 PM January 8, there are 4,283 confirmed positive cases at Jackson facilities and 531 confirmed positive staff cases.  MDOC positive case numbers are cumulative. As of 9 AM January 13, there 36 persons at Henry Ford Allegiance Health being treated as inpatients for COVID-19. Note:  Jackson County will post COVID-19 data daily by mid-afternoon, Monday-Saturday, keeping with the schedule established by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). The cumulative numbers posted on Monday will include the data from Sunday and Monday.  Recovered numbers are being posted as received.  Epicurve data and Township maps are also posted on Mondays by 3:30 PM. *These numbers do not reflect any cases or deaths identified through Michigan…
