Michigan Reports 4,992* Coronavirus Cases Today, State Total Now 502,119

(January 4, 2021 3:38 PM) Michigan reported 4,992* coronavirus (COVID-19) positive test cases today, with the state reported total now at 502,119. Michigan is reporting 80 COVID-19-related deaths today with the state total at 12,598.  *Note on cases (01/04/21): Today’s daily case count represents new referrals of confirmed cases to the MDSS since Saturday, January 2nd.  Over the two days, Sunday and Monday, the average number of new confirmed cases is 2,496 per day. State Cumulative Total of Recovered COVID-19 Cases (as of 12/30/2020): 363,611. This information is updated Monday through Saturday at 3 p.m., with COVID-19 results included as of 10 a.m.  Monday reports include Sunday data.

Jackson County Cumulative Report: 7,758 COVID-19 Positive Cases and 162 Deaths

Updated with weekly map. (UPDATED January 4, 2021 10:13 PM) The Jackson County Health Department released the COVID-19 positive numbers for Jackson County.  As of 12 PM today, there are 7,758 positive cases (cumulative), and 162 deaths (cumulative)*.     There are 123 new cases and 4 new deaths since Saturday’s report.  Cumulative recovered, as of January 4, 2020:  5,730** The cumulative numbers posted on Mondays include the data from Sunday and Monday.  Recovered numbers are being posted as received. The Michigan Department of Corrections is reporting as of 4:00 PM December 30, there are 4,130 confirmed positive cases at Jackson facilities and 508 confirmed positive staff cases.  MDOC positive case numbers are cumulative. As of 4 PM December 28, there 43 persons at Henry Ford Allegiance Health being treated as inpatients for COVID-19. Note:  Jackson County will post COVID-19 data daily by mid-afternoon, Monday-Saturday, keeping with the schedule established by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Governor Signs Rep. Alexander’s Bill Memorializing Fallen Jackson Service Member

(January 4, 2021 10:43 AM) A proposal from state Rep. Julie Alexander, of Hanover, honoring a local military hero in the Jackson community was recently signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. A portion of M-60 in Jackson County from Fairway Drive to Emerson Road will be known as the “Sergeant Matthew R. Soper Memorial Highway” after House Bill 5570 was recently signed by the governor. Sgt. Soper died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device in Bayji, Iraq on June 6, 2007. A Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient, Sgt. Soper was just 25 years old and had served one tour in Iraq before being called up again in June 2006. “This tribute recognizes the sacrifice Sgt. Soper made for his fellow community members and his country,” said Alexander. “Our military heroes put their lives on the line to keep our country safe while protecting American freedoms and ideals. This memorial is the least we can do to show our gratitude for the bravery and service of Sgt. Soper.” In June, Alexander was joined in testimony before the House Transportation Committee by Soper’s sister, Amy Ciokajlo, who offered comments about what the tribute would mean for her family…

Jackson District Library presents “Library to Go” Boxes Sign Up.  This free subscription-like service will provide your children, aged 0-9, with a selection of materials based on your preferred options! These materials will be yours to keep, so you don’t need to worry about returning them to the library.  Boxes will ship near the end of the month.  Registration for February boxes will be open January 4-10 (or until all slots are filled due to limited availability). Stay tuned for the sign-up link.  Due to the amount of interest in this program, registration will open once per month for the next month’s subscription box.
