Gov. Whitmer Announces Expansion of Food Assistance To Many Low-Income Students Who Are Attending College

(March 31, 2021 1:54 PM) Michigan will expand eligibility for food assistance benefits on Thursday, April 1 so that college students struggling financially during the pandemic can get help buying food and stay in school, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced. “College students should not have to choose between furthering their education and putting food on the table – especially during a pandemic,” Gov. Whitmer said. “I am pleased that we are able to work with the Biden administration to help college students in Michigan who are working hard to pursue their dreams.” Under a temporary change approved by the federal government, college students may be eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits if their families are estimated to be unable to contribute to their college costs or if their college or university considers them eligible for a federal or state work study program – regardless of whether they are enrolled in such a program. This could make approximately 200,000 more Michigan college students eligible. Students are considered to have no family contribution to their college expenses if they have an estimated family contribution of $0 on their federal student aid…

(March 31, 2021 1:05 PM) This morning, City of Jackson officials and local LGBTQ activists raised the Transgender Pride Flag up the flag pole in Horace Blackman Park in downtown Jackson. The special white, pink, and blue flag flying is to honor transgender residents for International Transgender Day of Visibility. Since 2009, the Day of Visibility has celebrated transgender people by recognizing their successes and roles in communities. Jackson’s flag flying marks the first time the City has honored the Day of Visibility, and the first time the Transgender Pride Flag has been displayed in a public space in Jackson County. Mayor Derek Dobies and City Manager Jonathan Greene helped hoist the flag onto the flag pole in Horace Blackman Park, at the corner of Michigan and Jackson in downtown Jackson. Mayor Dobies says this shows the City is supportive of its transgender residents and visitors. “Jackson is a tolerant and inclusive City that views diversity as a strength. We want people to feel welcome here, and this flag is a reflection of that,”  Dobies said.…

Governor Whitmer Increases State Daily Vaccination Goal to 100,000

(March 31, 2021 8:15 AM) Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer raised Michigan's COVID-19 vaccination goal from 50,000 to 100,000 shots per day. The new goal is based on the state’s efforts to expand equitable and efficient vaccine administration by partnering with private and public organizations in communities across the state, and is made possible by continuous week-over-week increases in the number of vaccines allocated to the state of Michigan. For 38 days, the state has met or exceeded its original goal of administering 50,000 vaccinations per day. To date, Michigan has administered 4,207,102 vaccines, moving the state closer to its goal of equitably vaccinating at least 70% of Michiganders ages 16 and older as soon as possible. “Michigan is making great strides as our rollout of the COVID-19 vaccines continues ramping up,” said Governor Whitmer. “The safe, effective vaccines are one of the best ways to protect you and your family from coronavirus, and they are essential to getting our country back to normal so we can hug our families, get back to work, send our kids to school, and get together again. These new, higher vaccine targets are a testament to what we can do together, and we need to meet them so we can keep rebuilding our economy. Thanks to capable leadership at the national level, heroic efforts by frontline workers who are working around the clock, and the dedication of millions of Michiganders, we will put…
