By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 9, 2021 10:31 PM) The Vandercook Lake High School varsity competitive cheer almost didn’t know how to react when it was announced the Jayhawks had won the Cascades Conference title. They were probably used to someone else – namely Michigan Center or Addison – being named as conference champions. But the Jayhawks won the conference title on Tuesday at home. Vandercook – winners of two of three jamborees this season – won the championship with a three-round total of 755.92. Michigan Center finished second (746.24), Addison was third (717.66), Napoleon took fourth place (623.9), and Grass Lake placed fifth (614.1). It wasn’t until VCL Coach Sarah DuBois held up the conference trophy that the Jayhawks celebrated. “We just work hard every week and stay focused about ourselves,” DuBois said. “Winning two jamborees was huge. “That boost of moral is what led us to the next meet.” It is Vandercook Lake’s first Cascades Conference title in competitive cheer. “For a season that you didn’t…

Governor Whitmer Marks One Year COVID-19 Anniversary
(March 9, 2021 5:08 PM) Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex and upon all public buildings and grounds across the State of Michigan to be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday, March 10 to honor the one-year anniversary of the coronavirus in Michigan and mourn those who have lost their lives to COVID-19. “One year ago, our world changed forever as we confronted the greatest challenge of our generation,” Whitmer said. “By lowering the flags to honor the one-year anniversary of the virus’s confirmed presence in Michigan, we remember the nearly 16,000 sons and daughters, moms and dads, and neighbors and friends who passed away from COVID-19 in Michigan. As we honor their legacies, let us also take a moment to grieve together, and know that we are not alone in our mourning. Governor Whitmer and Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist are also marking the one-year anniversary by asking all Michiganders to turn on the lights outside of their homes on Wednesday, March 10th, from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM, in remembrance of the Michiganders we have lost. “We’ve had a difficult year and lost so many fellow Michiganders, “said Governor Whitmer. “On Wednesday, Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist and I urge everyone to turn on their porch lights for an hour, so that we can remember those we’ve lost and remind ourselves that even in times of darkness, we’re in this together. As we mark this occasion, we also…
