MDHHS Rolls Back Mandatory Testing Order for Agricultural and Food Processing Employees

(July 2, 2021 2:39 PM) The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has rescinded its order requiring COVID-19 testing for agricultural employees. This change is being made in light of increasing vaccination rates; declining COVID-19 cases; expanded access to testing and vaccinations; and enhanced housing and worker protections currently in effect to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19.  “With COVID-19 transmission numbers low and increasing vaccination rates, we are removing the requirement for testing for these workers,” said Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director. “The most important tool we have is the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine and we encourage everyone to join the nearly 62% of Michiganders who have already been vaccinated as soon as possible.” MDHHS recently awarded six contracts totaling nearly $60 million to the help improve COVID-19 vaccination access for high-risk populations and settings across Michigan, including for seasonal agricultural workers. In addition, partnerships have been created with Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers, employers and communities to meet workers where they are and provide vaccination, testing and support to keep workers and families safe. This includes vaccinations offered by the Michigan Primary Care Association (MPCA). “The Michigan Primary Care Association in partnership with our member Health Centers have…

Betty’s Dog Park Ribbon Cutting 7-1-21 | Photo Gallery

(July 1, 2021 4:56 PM) Jackson residents and their four-legged furry friends are celebrating the official opening of the City’s first dog park! A ribbon-cutting event for Betty’s Dog Park held today welcomed this pooch paradise into the community.  The new park is named after Betty Dahlem Desbiens, a long-time Jackson resident who donated funds to make the park possible. Betty’s Dog Park is fully fenced, with separate areas for big and small dogs to roam free, including sidewalks, benches and picnic tables. A secure fence system will help ensure pets do not escape. The dog park makes use of space in Beech Tree Park, a public park that’s been without a use since its award-winning beech tree was removed due to a lightning strike.  Downtown Jackson has seen a housing boom in recent years, with hundreds of new apartment units added to the area. Located within a short walk from downtown, Betty’s Dog Park will be useful for downtown apartment dwellers and their pets to have ample space for play time.  Desbiens helped cut the ribbon at Thursday’s event alongside City officials. She was inspired to help with a dog park project when she drove past Beech Tree Park…
