Gary Kalahar. Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (August 21, 2021 9:54 PM) Jackson golfer Gary Kalahar was cut from his high school golf team for four consecutive years. He has played in only one Jackson County major golf tournament in the past 40 years. And spent more time with a pen in his hand rather than a wedge the last three decades. But that has not hindered his love for the game of golf or his passion to cover the game in Jackson County. Others have taken note of Kalahar’s passion for reporting and his historical perspective about the game of golf in Jackson County for the past 25-plus year. The Jackson Golf Hall of Fame committee earlier in the week announced the former Jackson Citizen Patriot reporter is this year’s inductee into the HOF. Kalahar will become the 68th member into the Jackson Golf Hall of Fame in ceremonies to be held September 19 at 1:30 p.m. at Ella Sharp Park Golf Course. The public is invited to the induction ceremony. “It is just a tremendous honor because of the people I know in the Hall of Fame,” Kalahar said. “It is especially…
Cannon Risner follows through on a shot during the City Golf Championship at Cascades Golf Course on Saturday. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (August 21, 2021 9:46 PM) A lot of young golfers rely on being able to hit a long drive and beat their opponents – and golf course – with length. Leslie golfer Cannon Risner showed a complete command of golf skills – especially with his short game. Risner overcame a deficit to win the Jackson City Golf Championship 6-and-4 over Mike Brockie on Saturday in the 36-hole final. It is the first (non-junior) major title for Risner who will begin his collegiate golf career at Ferris State University next week. “I have played out here a lot, so I know most of the breaks in the greens,” Risner said. “My caddie Justin (Bunch) also helped.” Risner trailed Brockie 2-down after 18 holes. He jumped out to quick lead over Brockie, but the veteran golfer won five holes on the back nine of the first 18 for the lead. Risner won eight of the next 14 holes to close out the match. His ability to get up and down on some of the tricky pin placements was key…

(August 21, 2021 9:20 AM) The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will close one lane of US 127 from Liberty Road to Ayers Road for resurfacing. Traffic will be reduced to one lane with a traffic signal during daytime hours. An alternate route is advised. MDOT also announced it is replacing the Neery drain culverts at the US-12/M-50 intersection. US-12 and M-50 will both have single-lane closures in each direction at the intersection. An alternate route is advised. This work will result in better drainage that will help protect both of these roadways. Closing lanes during this type of work is necessary to provide the safest work area possible for crews and motorists. Both projects are scheduled to begin at 7 AM on Tuesday, August 24.
