MDHHS and MDE Urging Universal Masking When School Resumes

(December 30, 2021 12:23 PM) The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Michigan Department of Education (MDE) are sending a letter to superintendents urging schools to reinforce actions that can help alleviate the risks associated with this COVID-19 pandemic — particularly in anticipation of the highly transmissible omicron variant. Implementing prevention measures will protect students, teachers and staff, and will help maintain in-person learning. The guidance is intended to keep school buildings open and allow students and staff to return to school safely after winter break. MDHHS continues to reinforce that vaccination remains the best public health measure to protect Michiganders from COVID-19. Children ages 5 and up are eligible to be vaccinated. Schools should encourage all who are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine and booster dose, and where possible host vaccine clinics to facilitate access for students, families, teachers and staff. The most effective way to prevent transmission within school buildings and reduce prolonged disruptions to in-person learning is to layer multiple prevention strategies as recommended by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “Our priority has remained keeping students safe,” said MDHHS director Elizabeth Hertel. “Children ages 5 and older now can…

Jackson County Cumulative Report: 29,015 COVID-19 Positive Cases and 440 Deaths

(December 30, 2021 12:00 PM)  The Jackson County Health Department released the COVID-19 positive numbers for Jackson County.  As of 12:00 PM today, there are 29,015 positive cases (cumulative), and 440 deaths (cumulative)*.   There are 143 new cases and 4 new deaths since yesterday’s report. As of December 21, there are 76 persons at Henry Ford Allegiance Health being treated as inpatients for COVID-19.  The Jackson County Health Department has announced a change in reporting effective Oct. 6, 2021.  Cases defined as probable will be reported in cumulative case and death counts.  As additional methods of testing besides the PCR test have become more common, the amount of cases classified as probable has increased and are included to provide a more accurate picture of disease in our community.  Cumulative recovered, as of December 30:  25,632** The cumulative numbers posted on Mondays include the data from Saturday, Sunday and Monday.  Recovered numbers are being posted as received.  *These numbers do not reflect any cases or deaths identified through Michigan Department of Corrections.  Their numbers are listed under a separate category and reported by the state at Michigan Statistics. MDHHS Issues Statement on CDC Guidelines

(December 30, 2021 11:26 AM) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently issued new guidance for quarantine and isolation that modified or shortened the quarantine and isolation period in some circumstances. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) intends to review the supporting evidence behind this guidance, while awaiting additional information from the CDC, specifically for special populations and in high-risk settings. In the interim, MDHHS will retain current quarantine and isolation guidelines including guidelines for K-12 and congregate care settings. MDHHS will update Michigan’s guidance when additional information becomes available from the CDC. Michigan continues to experience high rates of transmission and has several tools to further prevent the spread of COVID-19. The delta variant has already fueled the current surge in COVID cases and hospitalizations. The high transmissibility of the omicron variant underscores the importance of Michiganders practicing the COVID mitigation practices that are known to reduce spread and risk. Ensuring that as many Michiganders as possible are vaccinated is the best protection available against additional variants of concern and reduces the strain on hospitals. All Michiganders are urged to wear well-fitting masks covering the mouth and nose, socially distance, get tested for COVID-19…

Jackson County Health Department Vaccine Report Dec. 30, 2021

(December 30, 2021 11:06 AM)  The Jackson County Health Department has released the following "Looking Back at a Year of Vaccination and Ahead to 2022":  The Jackson County Health Department (JCHD) administered its first dose of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine on December 23, 2020.  Since the first local case confirmed in March 2020, 7,125 residents had tested positive for COVID-19 in Jackson County.  The arrival of a vaccine created a sense of hope that there was a way to take back some of the control we had lost to the virus. By the mid-May 2021, the JCHD, with the help of the Michigan National Guard and volunteers, had administered 14,800 vaccine doses.  A large majority of vaccines were offered at drive through clinics at the Jackson County Department of Transportation and the Jackson Fire Department Pringle Street station. Our clinics were only a small part of the vaccination effort.  Henry Ford Allegiance Health held vaccine clinics at One Jackson Square, Keeley Park, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Center.  The Center for Family Health provided vaccines to their patients, staff, and many community members.  Local pharmacies also joined the vaccination effort.  CVS and Walgreens administered vaccines in nursing homes, adult foster…
