Tompkins Goes All Out – On and off the Field

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (April 24, 2022 8:00 AM) To say that Columbia Central High School student-athlete Kenadee Tompkins goes all out all the time may be an understatement. Last year a teammate asked her to stop throwing the ball so hard across the diamond in practice.  The searing throws from shortstop were painful. Some high school graduates plan to go to college and live at home during the summer. Others get into the workforce and eventually move out of the nest they have inhabited over the years. Tompkins plans to do both as she will attend Jackson College to study nursing, work, and move into an apartment. “It was scary to me (the amount of money it takes to attend a four-year college),” Tompkins said. “I saw that with my brother.” Before the real world hits Tompkins, she has a senior year of softball to complete. The Golden Eagles are off to a 10-3 start having started the season winning seven consecutive games. “As a team, we have gotten a lot better,” Tompkins said. “It is exciting to see.” Tompkins said she made it to every softball workout at CCHS despite working and playing volleyball. The Golden Eagles…

Van Poppel Grows by Leaps and Bounds in Track, Field

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports  (April 23, 2022 8:00 AM) A little bit bigger. A tenth or two faster. And the belief is what is making a long jumper out of Napoleon High School athlete Holden Van Poppel. The sophomore was a state qualifier in hurdle events last year.  But his long jump ability only netted him jumps of 17 feet or so in 2021. This year he jumped 20 feet, 8.5 inches. “Our coaches are helping me in practice,” Van Poppel said. “The hardest part is extending your legs out so you can get further. “I am just doing light stuff now … not at my peak.” Van Poppel is atop the James R. Selby Track and Field top performers list in the long jump (20-8.5) and the 110-meter hurdles (15.99 seconds). He is also in the top five in 300-meter hurdles.  The hurdler finished 11th in the 110-meter high hurdles and 13th in the 300-meter hurdles at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state meet a year ago as a freshman.  “I think I will be more confident this year,” Van Poppel said. “I should have been up there (in the top eight to earn a…
