Grass Lake High School senior Lexus Bargesser injured her ACL, Meniscus, and sprained a few things in her left knee during the first basketball game of the 2021-2022 season. The seven-time state champion – two team championships and five individual titles – wasn’t about to lose her entire senior season to a knee injury. Earlier in the week, she returned to run the 400-meter dash in 1 minute, 2 seconds in winning a tri-meet. She backed that up by winning the 400-meter event in nearly an identical time on Friday night at the Stockbridge Invitational. The Grass Lake senior started running approximately a month after surgery. “I was determined to get something out of my senior year,” Bargesser said Friday night. “My doctors worked with me and encouraged me to do this … and told me I could. “That was my goal.” Bargesser injured her knee in a freak accident in the Warriors’ first basketball game of the season. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (May 7, 2022 8:00 AM) Spectators watching the Columbia Central High School tri-meet this past week may have seen CCHS runner Jacob Walker talking to a Hillsdale runner during the 3,200-meter run. He wasn’t chirping and trash talking his opponent … Walker was pacing the runner trying to help the Hillsdale runner get under 11 minutes in the event. That may all you need to know about the CCHS senior. Walker has improved by leaps and bounds the last two years just by pushing himself to get better. “Running – especially distance running – teaches you to go above and beyond what you think you can,” Walker said after winning the 800-, 1,600-, and 3,200-meter races at the tri-meet. “I have put in the endurance the past two years.” Walker finished 20th in the state in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state cross country finals last November at Michigan International Speedway. Milan won a majority of the relay events and Napoleon took first place in the long jump team event (55-6 feet). Stockbridge Invitational: Western earned the title with 122 points and Concord placed third with 102. Grass Lake was fifth (58), Hanover-Horton finished eighth (39), Northwest was 10th (15), and Springport was 12th (9). Jacob Singleton won the 1,600-meter run (4:37) and the 3,200-meter run (9:59) for Western. East High Street bridge over the Grand River. JTV photos. (May 6, 2022 5:05 PM) The replacement of a deteriorating bridge will shut down a busy Jackson street for five months. E. High Street between Executive Drive and South Street will close to traffic on Monday, May 9 for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to replace the E. High crossing over the Grand River. The $2 million project from MDOT will replace the bridge beams, repave and widen the concrete driving surface, and upgrade railings on each side. Built in 1963, the E. High Street bridge is an important connection between a large industrial park on the southeast side of Jackson and U.S. 127. The City of Jackson Engineering Division says the aging bridge cannot keep up with the increasing heavy truck traffic and now requires a complete replacement. This construction project is expected to be completed in Oct. 2022. A detour will take drivers to Losey Avenue and South Street. Three other MDOT bridge replacements are currently underway in the City of Jackson. An aging bridge over the Grand River on E. (May 6, 2022 3:46 PM) The selection of a restructured classification procedure for ice hockey and the approval of new boys wrestling weight classes were among the most notable actions taken by the Representative Council of the Michigan High School Athletic Association during its annual Spring Meeting, May 1-2 in Gaylord. The Spring Meeting of the 19-member legislative body of the Association’s more than 1,500 member schools is generally the busiest of its sessions each year. The Council considered 33 committee proposals and dealt with a variety of eligibility rule, postseason tournament and operational issues. The Council approved an Ice Hockey Committee proposal to continue classifying teams by enrollment, but with consideration to whether those teams are standalone (one school) or cooperative (multi-school) programs. Approximately half of MHSAA member hockey programs are cooperatives. Beginning with the 2022-23 season, standalone and cooperative programs will be ranked by enrollment but on separate lists, with the top one-third from each list put into Division 1, the second thirds into Division 2 and the lowest thirds into Division 3. This change is expected to rebalance the divisions; in the recent past, Division 1 has been made up mostly of cooperative programs because the combined…
