Stuard Earns PGA Playing Privileges for 2022-2023

(September 5, 2022 8:50 AM) Jackson native Brian Stuard earned playing privileges on the PGA Tour for the 2022-2023 season. Stuard finished 24th in the Korn Ferry Tour Final 25 – a three tournament playoff format for players who missed the top 25 on the Korn Ferry Tour (26-75) and players who finished in the Nos. 126-200 on the PGA Tour this season. Stuard finished 128th on the PGA Tour in 2021-2022 – just three places out of the top 125 and automatic exemptions into PGA Tour events. The 39-year-old native of Jackson has maintained PGA TOUR membership every season since graduating from the Korn Ferry Tour in 2012, making seven FedExCup Playoffs appearances, including a streak of four in a row from 2018 – 2021. A frequent RV traveler and a past champion of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Stuard earned a place in The Finals 25 via top-30 finishes in the first two Korn Ferry Tour Finals events. He missed the cut in the final tournament this week but made the top 25.  Stuard could have made a number of PGA Tour starts in 2022-2023 based on his 128th-place finish, but opted to play in the three-tournament…

Hilderley Plays Golf, Volleyball at LCCHS

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (September 4, 2022 8:00 AM) COVID-19 canceled a lot of events for people over the last two-and-a-half years. Events like weddings, family gatherings, and athletic events. So it is like a twist of fate that Lumen Christi Catholic High School golfer Ashley Hilderley joined her high school golf team because of COVID 19. Hilderley was big into volleyball, but in August of 2020 it was announced that the sport would be canceled for the season due to COVID 19.   The then-sophomore joined the golf team. “I have played golf forever, but I liked volleyball more,” Hilderley said of the fall sport. “I never thought about playing golf in high school.” A couple of weeks later, volleyball was reinstated with a number of restrictions and Hilderley just decided to play both. Today, she is the No. 1 golfer for the Titans – who have won a couple of invitationals and jamborees in the Interstate-8 Conference. She also competes as an outside hitter on offense and middle back on defense for the varsity volleyball team at LCCHS.  Playing both has Hilderley hopping during the fall months. “Last year we had a golf match in Marshall at…

Oliver Is Jack of All Trades for Western Football

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (September 3, 2022 8:00 AM) Most quarterbacks – in general – don’t like to get hit on the football field. Don’t tell that to Western High School quarterback Caden Oliver. He wakes up each day thinking of hitting people – between the football lines. The Jack of all trades is a quarterback, safety, and kick and punt returner for the Panthers.  In game one against St. Johns, Oliver scored on runs of 59 and 14 yards, finished with 103 yards rushing, made 10 tackles on defense, and intercepted a pass. “This is my senior year … if I have to go out there and take some hits and play hard so be it,” Oliver said. “I love how physical football is.” Western and Oliver expect to carry on the Panthers’ winning traditions in football. The Panthers have earned playoff spots in each of the last five seasons and have won two district titles. That wasn’t always the case. “We take summers very seriously around here … I think the culture has changed,” Oliver said. “It used to be an abnormality if Western won. “We expect to win now.” The Panthers won a district title last…
