(November 29, 2022 11:18 PM) The Michigan Theatre of Jackson today announced the start of a capital campaign to raise funds for a major restoration project. In making the announcement, Executive Director Steve Tucker said, “The project will restore the theatre to its original beauty while meeting the needs of the 21st Century.” The Restoration Project is being launched after ninety-two years and over three million visitors to the Michigan Theatre. Tucker said the goal is to bring the theatre back to its former optimal operating and performance efficiency. The restoration projects are organized in an order of both need and importance. For instance, logic demands that before the plaster and painting is completed, the climate control systems must be in place to allow for optimal plaster longevity. The goal of the campaign is $6 million, with $3 million already pledged or raised. (November 29, 2022 1:45 PM) Five neighborhood parks are looking “merry and bright” this holiday season thanks to a local non-profit organization. People for the Parks and Trails (PPT) worked with the City of Jackson to install lights in Betsy Butterfield Park, Elnora Moorman Plaza, Ganson Street Park, Austin Blair Park and Kiwanis Park. Volunteers installed lights with the permission of the Parks and Recreation Department throughout Nov., with the displays turning on after Thanksgiving Day. PPT collaborated with the Kiwanis Club of Jackson to put up lights and holiday decor at Kiwanis Park off N. Elm Avenue. The non-profit is focused on improving Jackson’s parks and trails through volunteering, fundraising and advocacy. 2022 was a busy year for People for the Parks and Trails, with the group completing volunteer projects at seven parks, two pedestrian trails and one cemetery. PPT also donated two new trash cans to the City's MLK Equality Trail to help reduce litter and pet waste along the trail. (November 29, 2022 11:35 AM) The Jackson District Library Board of Directors announced today the hiring of Liz Breed as JDL's new director, following a month-long search. Breed was previously JDL's assistant director. "We are delighted and looking forward to Liz taking over as JDL’s Director," JDL Board President Jacqueline Barber said. "With her wealth of experience, we are confident that we made the right choice in hiring her. Welcome aboard Liz." Breed will replace retiring director Sara Tackett beginning Dec. 16. Breed worked as the assistant director at JDL from 2016-2018 prior to a stint as the eLibrary coordinator at the Library of Michigan. She returned to JDL as the assistant director in 2021. Tackett started her employment at JDL as the youth services coordinator in 1998 after working for nine years as a children's librarian at the Hunterdon County Library in Flemington, New Jersey. She served as JDL's assistant director from 2012 to 2016 and began her stint as director in March 2016. "I have big shoes to fill and hope I can do half as good a job as Sara has done," Breed said.
