Bamm, Overweg Earn Basketball All-State Honors

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 29, 2023 9:29 AM ET) Two Jackson County girls basketball players earned first-team all-state honors as voted on by sportswriters from the Associated Press.  Columbia Central High School senior Zoie Bamm and Springport High School junior Maddux Overweg were announced as Division 3 all-state players yesterday.  Bamm owns nearly every scoring and rebounding record for the Golden Eagles with 1,456 points and 988 rebounds in her career. Bamm helped lead the Golden Eagles to a third consecutive district title this season scoring nearly 20 points and pulling down more than 15 rebounds per game. Overweg also led Springport to a district title in 2022-2023. She averaged 18.2 points, 6 assists, 6.6 steals, and 3.6 rebounds per game for the Spartans this season.

State of the City Address.  6:00 PM. Jackson Mayor Daniel Mahoney will deliver his second State of the City Address on Wednesday, March 29. The event starts at 6:00 p.m. and is happening at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center.  This will be the 6th Annual State of the City event in Jackson. Since the event started in 2018, Mayors have used the address to reflect on the City’s accomplishments over the previous year and look toward the future. Elected in Nov. 2021, Mayor Mahoney is currently serving his first term as Mayor of Jackson. This will be his second State of the City Address since taking office.  The State of the City Address is free to attend and open to the public. The event will be livestreamed on the City Facebook page. A recording will be available on the City website following the address. The MLK Recreation Center is located at 1107 Adrian Street in Jackson. Five Earn All-State Bowling Honors

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 28, 2023 8:26 PM ET) A state championship, several bowlers finishing in the top 16 of their respective divisions at the state finals, and conference titles led to five Jackson County bowlers earning all-state honors. The bowlers were named all-state by Michigan High School Interscholastic Coaches Association members. Dustin Moeckel of Napoleon High School earned first-team bowling honors in Division 3. The Napoleon senior earned a regional title and finished first during the qualifying at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state tournament at JAX 60 in Jackson. He lost in the opening round of the stepladder tournament. Napoleon won its first Cascades Conference title in boys’ bowling this season.  Jackson Kremer of Lumen Christi Catholic High School also earned first-team honors in Division 4. He finished 10th at the regional tournament and 12th at the Division 4 state tournament.  Brice Sandoval of Grass Lake earned second-team honors in Division 4. The GLHS junior helped lead the Warriors to a Division 4 state team title.  Kolbe Hamlin of Northwest earned second-team honors in Division 2. Kurt Robertson of Studio One Photography Earns Craftsman Degree

(March 28, 2023 11:22 AM ET) Kurt Robertson of Studio One Photography in Jackson has earned the Photographic Craftsman degree from Professional Photographers of America (PPA). The degree will be presented to Robertson M Photog. Cr. at the association’s annual convention, Imaging USA, held in Lexington KY. The Craftsman degree is an achievement of the highest caliber. It means that Robertson has met the standards of excellence set by PPA. He has been awarded the Photographic Craftsman degree in recognition of his service to the photographic profession as an orator, author, and mentor. In 2023, there were only 48 recipients. Robertson’s degree—and all the expertise it requires—illustrates his accomplishments and talent as one of a select few.  The Photographic Craftsman (Cr.Photog.) degree is awarded to photographers for their service as a speaker, author or mentor.  This degree shows that the photographer has gone beyond the creation of images and dedicated time to move the industry forward and encourage education. Debbie Shelley Retires After 44 Years at The Craft Agency After 44 years of service, Operations & Finance Manager, Debbie Shelley is set to retire on March 31st, 2023. Throughout the years, Debbie has been one of the most diligent, assertive, determined workers to ever step foot in The Craft Agency, Inc. She has made many wonderful friends through the family business, most of which have been lifelong friendships. We were honored to throw Debbie a surprise retirement party, with all her retired colleagues and family members to celebrate alongside us. During the party, Debbie recalled her initial interview for the Operations & Finance Manager position, many years ago. In the winter of 1979, Debbie was an ambitious 22-year-old, straight from the big city of Detroit. She walked into The Craft Agency, Inc’s home office on W Michigan Ave, all dressed to the nines. She sat down with Jim Craft, and he knew before her interview that he wanted to hire her. Debbie’s next adventure is to travel the country with her sister, Tina, in their new truck and their 32-foot travel trailer. Jackson College joins Detroit Regional Talent Compact

(March 28, 2023 9:13 AM ET) Jackson College signed the Detroit Regional Talent Compact, an equity-driven initiative led by the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Detroit Drives Degrees program. The Compact brings together stakeholders from business, philanthropy, government, K-12, and higher education to accomplish two goals: increase the Detroit region’s postsecondary attainment rate to 60 percent and reduce the racial equity gap by half by 2030. “We are proud to be a part of this comprehensive initiative of a broader southeast Michigan effort to help more students succeed in higher education, whether through the completion of a degree, a workplace credential, or transferring to a baccalaureate institution,” said Jackson College President Daniel J. Phelan. “We join many of our peer community colleges in the state in sharing ideas and experiences that lead to better student outcomes.
