MLK Roundabout Sculpture Unveiling 8-25-23 | Photo Gallery

(August 25, 2023 2:42 PM ET) Installation of the new sculpture at the center of the S. MLK Drive roundabout is complete. "The Tower of Us/We Rise" by Maxwell Emcays was unveiled Friday afternoon at a community event. This illuminated 30-foot sculpture depicts individuals standing on each other's shoulders forming a tower, representing how community support can help with overcoming adversity. The piece was selected by the City Council earlier this year after a public engagement effort with south side residents from the Public Arts Commission.  Emcays, a Chicago-based artist, spoke at the unveiling along with City officials. The sculpture will be lit up at night, with the lights turning starting Friday night. This roundabout and sculpture is a gateway to the MLK Drive corridor and is the start of more improvements on the way for the south side neighborhood. Photos by Bart Hawley, JTV. Consumers Energy Estimating Restoration Will Continue into Sunday Night

Consumers Energy photo. (August 25, 2023 1:15 PM ET) Consumers Energy has begun restoring power to around 200,000 homes and businesses hit by the fierce storm that swept across the state Thursday night, causing damage from Grand Rapids through Jackson and into  Southeast Michigan. Over 1,000 lineworkers and support teams are working around-the clock and expect to restore most outages by the end of Sunday. Consumers Energy continues to assess the widespread storm damage and, as of early Friday, had restored about 11,000 customers affected by winds that reached 75 miles per hour. Over 660 crews join the restoration effort, including crews from Kentucky, Alabama and Pennsylvania that should arrive in Michigan today and Saturday. As of 1:15 PM, 30,041 Consumers Energy customers in Jackson County are without power. “Our all-hands-on-deck effort will continue today and throughout the weekend to restore power as quickly as possible for all customers impacted by this severe storm,” said Greg Salisbury, one of Consumers Energy’s Officers in Charge for the storm. “The safety of our customers and crews will remain the top priority as we work to make repairs, and we appreciate our customers’ patience.” Customers can report an outage and check the status…

Storm Cleanup and Power Restoration Underway

Downed trees and power lines blocking Oakridge Drive.  City of Jackson photo. (August 25, 2023 10:41 AM ET) The City of Jackson is responding to multiple reports of downed trees and wires blocking streets after Thursday night's storm. The Dept. of Public Works has multiple crews out clearing streets. Some areas cannot receive attention until Consumers Energy takes care of downed power lines. Residents are encouraged to stay away from any downed power lines and report them to Consumers by calling 800-477-5050. Public Works is prioritizing clearing streets first, and then will focus on cleaning up trees from streets, parkways and sidewalks. This process could take up to one week to complete. Crews will not accept tree debris from private property, so please do not place limbs and branches along streets from yards. To report a blocked street or sidewalk in the City of Jackson, please call the Dept. of Public Works at 517-788-4170. Consumers Energy has started the work to restore power to more than 200,000 homes and businesses affected by a fierce storm Thursday night that delivered up to 75 mph winds from Grand Rapids through Southeast Michigan. Over 1,000 people are mobilized and starting the around-the clock…
