YMCA of Jackson Plans Oktoberfest

The YMCA is planning a new Oktoberfest event for Saturday, October 5.  Wesley Street will be closed to traffic all day as tents, stages and vendors will fill the space offering food, drink, games, entertainment and demonstrations.  Event chair Gary Schultz and committee members Mike Ross and Shawna Tello are including the 4 neighboring churches and other partners in the day long event.  Other guests:  City Councilman Andy Frounfelker;  BuilderWalk with Andy Woell, General Materials;  Consumers Energy's "Coney Challenge" coverage;  United Way of Jackson County Executive Director Ken Toll with Cardboard Boat Race participants John Shough, Jason Reith and Kris Herr;  a tour of Heartland Health Center;  AARP Fashions for a Cause with Maggie Gilson.  The fashion show is scheduled for September 20 at Gene Davis and Sons Banquet Center at 6pm.  Reservations and details at 1-877-926-8300.

Jackson Globetrotting Chef to Appear on “Chopped”

Chucky Buckles Week 3 Game Picks

With a second straight impressive week at 10-2, Chucky Buckles proudly flaunts a 20-4 record after two weeks. Lumen Christi’s Angela Hubert signs with Davenport University

  Larry Jacobson, JTV Sports After Lumen Christi High School senior Angela Hubert signed her letter-of-intent to play basketball at Davenport University (near Grand Rapids) on Monday morning, there was one final item to take care of: Her senior year of high school. “I feel like I can really enjoy my senior year now,” Hubert said after the short ceremony with her parents, family and school administrators from both Davenport and Lumen Christi. “It’s a big relief to make the commitment and to be able to say it’s done. I’m really excited about this year and beyond.” Ironically, what Angela enjoyed about Lumen Christi is what attracted her to Davenport. “There’s a real feeling of family and community here at Lumen Christi – from the students to the faculty,” she said. “I’m going to miss that about Lumen Christi, but I got that same feeling about Davenport. It’s a great fit for me. I really like the whole coaching staff and the other players and I just felt at home there.” Hubert, who averaged just over 12 points a game and shot nearly 80% from the free throw line last year for the Titans, spent time at an open-gym session…

Update on SAU and UofM Health System Collaboration

Faculty and students at Spring Arbor University have begun collaborating with researchers and clinicians from the University of Michigan Brachial Plexus Program.  The program offers students the opportunity to work with one of the premier programs in the country and to provide advances in the treatment of the debilitating condition.  According to MedSAU Fund President David Hockenbrocht, this is the only medical research program in Jackson County.  Two of seven research programs are underway and Dr. Lynda Yang, Clinical Associate Professor, University of Michigan, Neurological Surgery and a leading expert on Adult and Pediatric Brachial Plexus Syndrome provided an update on the partnership.  Mariana Popadich, Nurse Practitioner,  plans on involving nursing students in research and education.  Other guests:  Erica Zimny, Managing Attorney, Legal Services of South Central Michigan;  Judy Gail Krasnow, Historic Prison Tours;  Kenny Price and Don Nelson, Grand River Environmental Action Team;  Linda Sisco and Nicki Vance, Village of Spring Meadows "Greatest Pet Show on Earth", Saturday at the community from 10am to 4pm.
