Back at home, Napoleon football takes aim at season’s fifth win

By Mike Moore                      Photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports Staff Writer   Napoleon — When the Napoleon football team beat Manchester last fall, it ended a streak of losses that annually dated back to 2006.   When the teams meet Friday night, well, it’s the Pirates looking to make a streak of their own with two wins in two years.   And as coach Scott Ashe spoke about it, there’s no other option.   “It’s a must win,” Ashe said bluntly. “We can’t let this go. We’re tied for first in the conference right now and have a lot to play for. We have to come out and play with a chip on our shoulder.”   With Week 7 set to go, the Pirates will “come out” in a way they have only once before — at home.   “Never been like this as far as I can remember,” Ashe said of five road games the first six weeks. “But we’re expecting a great crowd and a great atmosphere.”   Following consecutive wins, Napoleon is 4-2 on the season.   Manchester comes in 2-4.   “We’re not looking at their…

Mifsud, Western football confident heading into showdown with Lumen Christi

By Mike Moore                                                                     Photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports Staff Writer   Parma — His team will enter as a large underdog, both based on past seasons, past history and the past few weeks.   Dave Mifsud is just fine with that, too.   The final third of the 2017 regular season officially kicks off Friday night for high school football, and for Mifsud and his Western squad, one of the biggest games in program history takes flight at 7 p.m. at Lumen Christi.   “This is a big game, especially in the sense that we have a lot of people around here who aren’t big fans of Lumen,” Mifsud said. “But we’re going to face a program that is very good every year, and to me, they look like the best team in the conference. It’s going to be a great challenge, and we have our work cut out for us.”   A big game, a great challenge, and just maybe, the best shot Western…

Lumen and Coldwater, both 4-1, set to meet as Titans can clinch playoff spot

By Mike Moore Staff Writer                                                                     Photo: Ryan Kerwin, JTV    Jackson — The playoffs are officially on the line.   Yes, that’s a bit dramatic as the sixth week of the MHSAA football season is just a day away, but for the Lumen Christi squad, it’s also true.   Scheduled to play just eight regular season games this fall, the Titans, 4-1 through five games, can officially secure a spot in the 2017 postseason with a win Friday night over Coldwater.   Easier said than done.   “That’s a very well-coached team with some hard-nosed kids,” Lumen coach Herb Brogan said. “They are a tough team to play against.”   Coldwater started the season with three consecutive wins before getting upset by Western 28-21. The Cardinals bounced back last week with a 35-7 win over Northwest, and roll into Friday’s game seeking a bit of revenge.   Don’t forget last year’s 21-20 Lumen win in this series.   “Defensively, they are very aggressive,” Brogan said. “They’re…

Columbia Central taking aim at fourth win in five weeks Friday night

By Mike Moore                                                 Photo By Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports Staff Writer   Brooklyn — In 13 attempts before last Friday night, the Columbia Central football team had never beaten Ida.   And then, last Friday, well, the Golden Eagles went out and beat Ida.   “We have a lot of guys who have bought into the concept of next-guy up,” coach Josh Kubiak said. “We’ve had guys hurt. We’ve had guys miss a week. To be honest, we haven’t played a complete game yet, and we’re still 3-1. That says a lot about this team.”   Yet, as Kubiak spoke, he was very blunt about last weekend’s 46-38 win and this weekend’s home date with Blissfield.   “This game is a huge opportunity for us,” Kubiak said. “Last week was the first time we’ve ever beaten Ida, but if we don’t turn around and win this week, that win means nothing. It’s on us to follow up with another strong game.”   The key this week, the Golden Eagles’ coach said, rests on the defense.  …

First-year golfer Justin Kapke finishes as medalist with a 2-under 69

ADRIAN, Mich. – First-year golfer Justin Kapke made an impressive debut in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tuesday. The Plymouth High School product eagled the first hole – a par five – and that set the tone for the day. He scored a birdie on the 18th to finish as the medalist with a 2-under 69. Overall, Kapke finished the day with the eagle and four birdies. “Justin was incredible consistent off the tee, and controlled his irons well,” Albion Coach Jordan McArleton said. Kapke is the first Albion golfer to win medalist honors in a MIAA Jamboree since Zach Benedict and Mark McLaughlin shot rounds of 73 at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall in 2009. Albion finished sixth in the team standings. The Britons 310 total was three strokes behind Kalamazoo College and Olivet College which tied for fourth. Hope College and Calvin College (291) and Adrian College (298) were the top three teams. Jim Chapman had an eagle and two birdies in his round of 80. Justin Leeds also shot 80 and Soti Michalos contributed a score of 81. The second MIAA Jamboree of the fall is scheduled for Saturday at the Pine River Country Club in…
