Historic win only the beginning of what’s to come, Mifsud hopes, for his Panthers

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Parma — This will be recorded as another win, another small step toward what the Western football team hopes to do in the fall of 2017. But, really, this was anything but any of the above. Program defining? Maybe. Historic in one sense or another? Without a doubt. “I think we probably turned some heads in the conference with this one,” coach Dave Mifsud said bluntly but modestly. “It really is a statement-type win.” As you know by now, Mifsud was speaking of last Friday’s game against Coldwater. First things first, though. Entering the trip to Coldwater, the Panthers were 0-10 all time in the series and 0-4 since Mifsud took over. The teams played once last year, a 28-14 Cardinals victory. In 2015, they played twice, with Coldwater winning 34-0 in the regular season and then ending the Panthers’ playoff party with a 31-7 win in the pre-district. Napoleon football team looking forward to chance at knocking off Addison

That’s been the mindset the Pirates have operated under since opening 2017 with a 14-point loss to Columbia Central. Behind the 8-ball from the get-go, Napoleon was determined to bounce back. In Week 2, the team did with a vengeance, blowing out Grass Lake 45-8. Last week, in a much tighter game, the Pirates snuck past Michigan Center 17-14. “We’re playing focused and disciplined right now,” coach Scott Ashe said simply. “We’re playing well as a team right now, and that’s what we have to do.” Especially this weekend when the Pirates welcome in a 3-0 Addison team that has yet to be truly tested. “They are playing very good football right now,” Ashe said of the Panthers. Jets cross country runners see strong start

Courtesy Photo This past Friday, Sept. 8, the Jackson Jets hosted the NJCAA cross country meet. The men’s team placed second overall and the first two finishers, Jack Dulworth and Clinton Too, were from Jackson College. The first place overall finishers, Sarah Hanson and Madison Dunlap, were from the Jackson College’s women’s team. Overall it was a very successful day for the JC cross country team. This upcoming Friday the team will be running at the Spartan Invitational in Lansing, Mich. Steve Maddalena wins Tournament of Champions at Arbor Hills Golf Club

Maybe that’s why he keeps adding to his remarkable record, more than three decades after he started collecting Jackson golf titles. A project to revamp his swing continues to pay benefits, the latest coming Saturday when he won the Tournament of Champions at Arbor Hills Golf Club. Maddalena defeated Greg Zeller on the fourth hole of a sudden-death playoff after the two tied at even-par 72. Pete Walz was next at 75 in the field of eight in the tournament open to this year’s tournament winners and top 10 finishers on the Honor Roll. The victory pushed Maddalena to third on the final Honor Roll, behind Player of the Year Josh Dirlam and Mike Brockie. Three years ago, Maddalena was dissatisfied with his play enough to begin working on a swing change with pro Gary Robinson. After not winning a local major tournament in 2014 or 2015, he has now picked up three more victories in the last two years, pushing his total to 27. “I committed to changing the way I hit the ball,” Maddalena said of moving to a more consistent…

No. 2 Spring Arbor Women’s Soccer knocks off No. 1 UNOH in national championship rematch

Photo Courtesy of Chris Bauman, Spring Arbor University SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – No. 2 Spring Arbor University took down the defending national champions, and top-ranked, University of Northwestern Ohio 1-0 on Wednesday night in front of an electric, capacity crowd at the Cougar Soccer Complex. Sophomore Morgan Marshall recorded the game-winner in the 63rd minute as the Cougars avenged last year’s loss to the Racers in the 2016 NAIA National Championship Final. The victory improved Spring Arbor to a perfect 5-0-0 while also moving its home winning streak to 40 consecutive matches dating back to the 2014 season. Northwestern Ohio saw its 18-match winning streak come to an end, falling to 4-1-1 overall. The rematch of the last season’s title bout started slow with the nation’s top two sides trying to feel each other out. Northwestern Ohio, which ranked as one of the most explosive offenses in team country a year ago, was held in check by the SAU defense, anchored by Sarah Klunder, Malorie Henderlong, Jacquelyn Martin and Haley Lord. Western football could be halfway to playoffs with strong game against Marshall

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Parma — Dave Mifsud called the last three meetings of the last three years, “wild.” And when it comes to what’s happened with Mifsud’s Western football team and Marshall since 2014, well, that’s a pretty accurate, maybe even undersold, statement. “And we expect more of the same this time around,” Mifsud said simply. In 2014, the teams battled in overtime, an eventual 45-44 Marshall victory. In 2015, Western “had a chance to win before we fell apart,” Mifsud said of a 41-13 loss which was closer than the final score. Last fall, Western earned just its second win in 15 meetings over Marshall with a 32-30 victory. “These are two teams that plat at a very similar level,” Mifsud said. There’s been few teams that have played at Western’s level so far this year, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Michigan Center needs improvements with Napoleon coming to town

In that span, the Michigan Center football team faced Napoleon nine times. All nine times the Cardinals exited with a win — many of them lopsided. That all changed last fall when the Pirates beat Center 33-20 in Week 3, and then ended the Cardinals’ season with a 25-24 win in a Division 6 playoff opener. The teams are set to meet for the first time since last October Friday night at Center. “Our goal going into our first home game was to be 2-0 and getting ready to face one of the top teams in the conference,” Center coach Troy Allen said. “That’s what we’ve been able to do.” The Cardinals opened the year with an impressive 35-6 win over Climax-Scotts before last weekends, well, less-than impressive 15-0 win over Hanover-Horton. “The…

Since starting the 2016 season with two losses in three weeks, the Lumen Christi football team has now won 13 games in a row, including two impressive victories in 2017. But coach Herb Brogan knows what’s on deck Friday night, and knows his team will have to be even better if that win streak wants to reach 14. “We’re playing well right now. We’re a mature team, and we’re playing like it,” Brogan said. “We haven’t made many mistakes. We’ve run the ball well and we’re passing at about 75-percent completion rate right now.
