SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University freshman guard Paul Marandet (Warsaw, IN / Warsaw HS) has earned the Crossroads League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week award.   Marandet scored a career-high 25 points to lead Spring Arbor to a 62-53 road win over Purdue University Northwest on Friday. The Warsaw, Indiana native made a season-best seven field goals shooting 7-for-10 from the floor. He also made a season-high 10 free throws converting 10-of-12 attempts from the charity stripe. In addition to his scoring, Marandet added four rebounds, three assists and two steals.   On the season, Marandet is averaging 11.9 points per game, which is the second-most by any freshman in the league. He is also averaging 4.4 assists per game – the sixth best mark overall in the league.   Spring Arbor (10-6, 2-2 CL), which has won five of its last six contests, will open the new calendar year with a home game against Crossroads League foe Goshen College (9-7, 2-2 CL) on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m.  

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Adam Davis and Jaylin Fordham combined to hit five free throws with seven tenths of a second left in regulation as Albion College secured local bragging rights in men’s basketball with an 80-75 victory over Spring Arbor University.   Albion answered a couple of Spring Arbor scoring runs to secure the victory, its fourth straight over the Cougars.   “Every game we have played against Spring Arbor has come down to the wire,” Albion Head Coach Jody May said, noting that Monday’s margin was the largest in the last four years. “It’s a credit to Coach Cottingham and his team.   “I was impressed with our team tonight,” May added. “We talked a lot about sharing the ball over the past week and we finished with a season-high 22 assists. SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University head men’s soccer coach Nathan Miller has been rewarded for leading the Cougars to one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2016 as he was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NAIA Mideast Region Coach of the Year.   “It is a well-deserved honor for Coach Miller,” said SAU Athletic Director Ryan Cottingham. “He has worked extremely hard to build a highly successful program on and off the field. Nate is very good and I am proud of his intentional approach to being a missional coach.”   Miller earned his first career NSCAA recognition by guiding SAU to a 15-4-4 record and a Crossroads League championship – the team’s first conference title since 2012. In 2016 MIS Cares awarded $14,000 in scholarships to 14 students from Jackson and Lenawee Counties to further their education. BROOKLYN, Mich. —In 2017 at least 10 students from Lenawee and Jackson Counties will further their education with $1,000 scholarships from MIS Cares. As part of an ongoing initiative to promote learning among students at all educational levels, MIS Cares will award $1,000 scholarships to students from both Lenawee and Jackson Counties. The scholarship is open to any graduating senior in Jackson or Lenawee County who is entering a STEAM-related (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) field at a college, university or trade school in the state of Michigan. LANSING, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University women’s basketball team got back on track with two non-conference road wins over the last three days. The Cougars completed the season sweep of Rochester College with a 74-60 victory on Saturday and followed it up with a 88-33 triumph over Great Lakes Christian College on Monday night. The Cougars trailed by as many seven in the second quarter, but sophomore Rachel Nelson fueled an 11-0 run over the final 3:06 of the period to give SAU a 30-26 lead at halftime.  Five Cougars finished in double figures, led by Townsley with 18 points, five rebounds and four steals. Aimee Konkel, chipped in 13 points, continues to approach the program’s career three-point record. She knocked down three more triples to give her 191, just four shy of the all-time mark. Rachel Driesenga registered her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Goggin added 11 points and Nelson finished with 10. Spring Arbor will return home to take on Indiana University-South Bend  on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 1 p.m. The Cougars will then travel west for the Arizona Christian University Classic in Phoenix, Arizona on Dec. 28-29.
