Butterfield returns to form with Lyle Ambs victory

By Gary Kalahar, JTV Sports   A more stable life has helped Tom Butterfield re-establish a firm grip on his golf game. “Life is more settled now and that’s led to better golf, that’s a perfect way to say it,” Butterfield said Sunday after re-claiming a spot as one of Jackson’s top golfers with a victory in the Lyle Ambs Memorial at Sharp Park Golf Course. Butterfield capped off four victories over two warm, taxing days with a 2-and-1 triumph over two-time champion Mike Brockie. It was the sixth major local championship for Butterfield, but the first since 2014. That year, he won two titles and lost a playoff for a third while capturing Player of the Year honors. But he has played in just a few tournaments since then. “Just circumstances, I didn’t get a chance to play much,” Butterfield said. In addition to putting that behind him, Butterfield has settled into a new career that not only has him more comfortable but has benefitted his game. After being in business for 15 years, he decided to put his master’s degree in education to proper use. He moved into a job last fall teaching science at Northwest Alternative School.…

Maddalena on target for sixth Jackson Masters victory

By Gary Kalahar, JTV Sports                        While preparing for the Jackson Masters golf tournament one evening last week, Steve Maddalena hit the Country Club of Jackson driving range after the balls had been picked up for the night. That meant he would have to gather any balls that he hit. After striking a bucket’s worth, the job of retrieving them didn’t prove too difficult, since every one of them was on the target green. That was a good sign for Maddalena, and a bad one for the rest of the field. Maddalena stayed on target all weekend, firing rounds of 67 and 71 for a 6-under-par 138 total and a comfortable five-stroke margin of victory to claim his sixth Jackson Masters championship. Cody Lysher finished second at 143, followed by defending champion Logan Anuszkiewicz, Mark Kurzynowski and Jack Brockie at 146. Lysher, Anuszkiewicz and Brockie all matched Maddalena’s 71 on a sunny, windy Sunday at the Country Club of Jackson, but no one made a run at the three-stroke lead he carried after his exceptional opening round. With his first Jackson Masters victory since 2009, the 59-year-old Maddalena became the…

Concord High School track and field athlete Vincent Giuliano

Giuliano built for speed at Concord

Concord High School track and field athlete Vincent Giuliano won the 100-meter dash Wednesday at home against Homer and Jonesville   By Jeff Steers JTV Sports   Concord High School junior Vincent Giuliano said he was “pushed” into track and field in sixth grade. Somewhere along the line he fell in love with the sport and what it could do for his body. Built like a linebacker, Giuliano has run a sub 11-second 100 this season, excels in the 200, and has vastly improved in the 400-meter dash. Giuliano has helped the Yellow Jackets all but wrap up a Big Eight Conference title in track. Concord earned a pair of wins Wednesday to finish the conference season with an undefeated record. Concord defeated Jonesville 84-49, and Homer 107-26, finishing the conference season at 7-0. Coach Mike Jurasek said the Big Eight Conference meet counts only one-third toward the final result. He noted the Yellow Jackets could finish as low as fifth, but still claim first place. That is exactly what Giuliano was doing Wednesday – winning the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, the 400 and was a member of a winning relay team. He ran the 100 in 11.5 seconds, the…

Brockie wins fifth Spring Thaw

Mike Brockie concentrates on a putt during the Jackson Spring Thaw Tournament Sunday at Cascades Golf Course.   By Jeff Steers JTV Sports   There is nothing orthodox about Mike Brockie’s golf game. From his “homemade swing” to his unique putting style, few professional golf professionals would recommend copying the Jackson-area golfer and high school golf coach. But it works for Brockie. He won his fifth Jackson Spring Thaw at Cascades Golf Course this weekend pulling within one of his friend Shane Clark for the most wins in the tournament. Brockie shot rounds of 72 and 71 to tie Riley Hestwood for the two-day tournament at Cascades Golf Course. Brockie won the sudden-death playoff hole against Hestwood with a par. Andrew Tindall finished third at 145, Greg Zeller and Bret Valkuchak tied for fourth with 146, and opening-round co-leader Steve Maddalena and Tom Butterfield tied for sixth. Justin Bunch won the first flight with a 152 and Cannon Risner won the second flight with 166. Brockie said he struggled last year on the golf course following the death of his son. “It was a rough year … after losing my son I tried to do everything (golf related) for him,”…
