Lumen Christi alum Maddalena picked for MIAA men’s golf sportsmanship award

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – After a fourth place finish in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s 36-hole event to close the fall season, Albion College is left wishing there were more rounds to play. Despite a 632 total in the two-day event, Albion finished two strokes behind Adrian College in the chase for fifth place in the final league standings after six rounds. The Bulldogs accumulated 1,885 strokes in the 108 holes played this fall, while the Britons total stood at 1,887. “It hurts to fall two strokes behind Adrian,” Coach Jordan McArleton said. “It is a good reminder to the players that every stroke counts. We were rounding into the right form, but there is a lot to build on moving forward.” Matt Falls and Connor Maddalena tied for 14th on the individual leaderboard with rounds of 79 and 77 for 36-hole totals of 156. Justin Leeds turned in Albion’s low score Saturday with a round of 76. He had a 158 total for the weekend. Jim Chapman completed Albion’s team score with rounds of 79 and 84 for a 163 total. Napoleon football with plenty to play for in trip to Manchester

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Napoleon - Two consecutive seasons with four wins at the finish line. Ten consecutive seasons with a ticket to the postseason denied. The Napoleon football team can change one of those facts, and take a massive step in altering the other tonight when they hit the road for what’s shaping up to be a must-see battle at Manchester. “I think it’s going to be a great atmosphere,” Pirates coach Scott Ashe said Thursday. “It’s going to be a great place to be on a Friday night. Our kids are fired up, and I’m sure they are too.” After starting the year with consecutive losses, the Pirates have run off four wins in four weeks, and only one of those was close. “We played two of the toughest teams around early,” Ashe said of losses to Columbia Central and Grass Lake to start the year. “Right now we’re coming together. Something a little different as Springport and Concord football meet

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Springport — On Friday night, the Springport and Concord football teams will meet on the gridiron, per usual. And it will be unlike anything else to happen before “I think everything about this game is awesome,” Concord coach Max Clark said late Thursday night. “It’s new to our community and players and team, to be in this situation and have the chances in front of us that we’ve do.” “This is what small-town football is all about,” Springport coach Matt Schwartzkopf said of his team’s home game with the Yellowjackets. “This is two towns who have communities that center around the football teams, especially when they are doing well. This is going to be a cool atmosphere that I think all the kids are going to love being a part of.” The meeting will be the 58th all-time between the schools, which are separated by a roughly 20-minute drive. Columbia’s journey to second playoff appearance in as many years is ripe for the taking

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Brooklyn — Football may be the ultimate sport in terms of a necessity of taking things one game and one week at a time. With six or seven days between games, so much can, and often does, change the dynamic of a team and a season. And with all that said, Josh Kubiak talked Thursday about the final four weeks of the regular season, and took a very cautious look at the challenges, and rewards, possibly awaiting his Columbia Central football team. “It’s really a matter of staying within ourselves for four weeks,” Kubiak said. “We believe that if we come out, play our game, we have a chance to win out and put together two great seasons back to back.” The Golden Eagles went 8-2 last year and are 3-2 entering Friday’s Homecoming tilt against Onsted. Bell rushes for 303 yards and three TDs, Lumen beats Marshall 28-20 to improve to 3-2

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Albion — There was an outright refusal to call this a must win, but in the days leading up to Friday night’s tilt against Marshall, Lumen Christi football coach Herb Brogan had no problem saying how “critical” of a contest this was. Afterwards, he had no problem wearing his emotions on his sleeve. “I’m thrilled with he way we played,” Brogan said with a smile of his guys 28-20 victory, the Titans most complete effort of the season so far. “Marshall is a really physical football team, and we’ve struggled with that all year. That was the focus all week long, and the kids answered the bell on both sides of the ball.” There was no pun intended in that last statement, but the irony is downright delicious. Bo Bell, the Lumen senior running back who’s served as the team workhorse all season long, was back at it again Friday, carrying the ball 39 times for a career-high 303 yards and three touchdowns. “He’s a great back,” Brogan said, seemingly struggling to put it in any clearer of terms. “I mean, 39 carries. ‘Critical’ game as Lumen (2-2) and Marshall (2-2) meet at Albion College

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson — The winner and the loser will still have playoff hopes, still have four weeks of a regular season remaining with just about everything on the line. But for the loser, well, the margin of error will be razor thin. “And that’s why this is a critical game,” Lumen Christi football coach Herb Brogan said of his team’s tilt with Marshall on Friday night. “We’ve been 2-3 before and found our way into the playoffs, but still, whoever losses this game is going to be behind the eight-ball.” Lumen, 2-2 following last weekend’s shutout of Northwest, takes on Marshall, also 2-2 and sneaking past Pennfield, Friday night at 7 p.m. at Albion College. The game will also be broadcast on JTV this weekend. Marshall is just 3-11 all-time against Lumen, and had lost nine meetings in a row entering last year. When the Jackson football team takes the field Friday at home against Grand Ledge, the chance at picking up a couple victories rests at the forefront. The Vikings, at 2-2 through four weeks, desperately need a victory to keep their playoff hopes alive and well. At the same time, the guys in orange and black will technically be the guys in pink. “It’s our Pink Viking Project,” coach Scott Farley said of the game. “The kids will wear pink jerseys with a name of someone in their lives who has passed, survived or is currently fighting cancer. It’s something we take very seriously.” Each player will don the name of a family member, a friend, or even someone from the community they will be dedicating the game to. The jerseys will be sold, as will T-shirts to get into the game. And all for a great cause. “All money raised goes to the cancer patience assistance fund with Henry Ford Allegiance Foundation in Jackson,” Farley explained. “We’re trying to financially help supports local families.” Farley said…
