Columbia Central girls have chance to just about clinch conference title Thursday night By Mike Moore Staff Writer Brooklyn – It’s been a while, and it’s been all-out dominance. The Blissfield High girls basketball team enjoys playing on its home court, so much so the Royals haven’t lost there since Jan. 24. The year was 2012. “We’re looking forward to it,” Columbia Central coach David McDevitt said of his team’s Thursday night tilt at Blissfield. “It’s not too often we end a game and talk about the next opponent. But Tuesday night after we beat Erie-Mason, all we could talk about was the next one and what’s on the line.” The Golden Eagles are 11-2 this season and a perfect 10-0 in the Lenawee County Conference standings. Blissfield, while perfect at home so far this year, is 11-1 overall and 8-1 in conference play. American 1 gives to local schools in Half-Court Shoot-Out events
Jackson, MI - American 1 Credit Union gave $1,000 to Hanover-Horton Schools after a student hit a half-court shot at half-time of the boys basketball game Tuesday night. American 1 has been holding half-court shoot-out events at area schools starting in December with Northwest School District. To enter individuals at the game just put their name in basket for a random draw. The school receives $250 for participating, and two fans attending the game are chosen at random to shoot a half court shot. For being selected the individuals receive $50, if they make a half-court shot American 1 Credit Union awards them $500, and the participating school then earns $1,000. American 1 scheduled 11 events this basketball season, and the Hanover-Horton game was the 7th event, and the first in which a half-court shot was made. 20th SAU Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony set for Saturday
SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University will host its 20th annual Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 6 in a celebration of Cougar athletics heritage, past, present and future. The ceremony, which begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m. in the Ralph Carey Forum, will follow Spring Arbor’s home men’s basketball game. The Cougars will play host to Grace College at 3 p.m. at the SAU Fieldhouse, and the Hall of Fame class will also be recognized during halftime of the contest. The Hall of Fame ceremony will begin with a welcome from Spring Arbor President Dr. Brent Ellis, and Athletic Director Ryan Cottingham will serve as the master of ceremonies. A dinner will begin at 6 p.m. with the induction ceremony to follow after the conclusion of the meal. Poljan pours in 31 as Lansing Catholic outruns and outlasts Jackson 65-59 By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – In a game of high-paced runs, it was ultimately a little old-fashion muscle down low that was the difference. The Jackson boys basketball team recovered from a nine-point deficit to start the fourth quarter Tuesday night against Lansing Catholic, but in some key times had no answer for senior power forward Tony Poljan in what eventually played out to a 65-59 loss at home. “It was a game of runs, and after we made our run, we didn’t take care of the ball when we needed,” Jackson coach Dan Crowley said afterwards. “But that’s a great team. They were getting the ball in transition and hurting us early.” The Cougars surprised Jackson a bit with an up-tempo attack, scoring 17 in the first quarter for a two-point lead at the break. Michigan Center boys on course to end title drought that’s lasted since 1993 By Mike Moore Staff Writer Michigan Center – When asked about the last time the Michigan Center boys basketball program captured a conference title, Travis Gaddy didn’t have to think very hard. The sixth-year varsity coach was just a student himself at Center, and also a member of the 1993 team that ended up first in the final standings. Since then, some close calls and frustration. But as the second half the 2015-16 season begins to take shape, the Cardinals have put themselves in a spot to change all that. After starting the year by splitting the first four games, they’ve reeled off five-consecutive wins at find themselves alone on top of the Cascades Conference heading into tonight’s home tilt with East Jackson. “Our next game is our biggest. Mission accomplished for the Onsted boys basketball team Thursday night. The Wildcats, especially Michigan-bound senior center Austin Davis, came out flying at Columbia Central. Davis scored 11 in the opening frame as Onsted jumped out to a 17-6 lead in what turned into a 62-24 victory that wasn’t even that close. “They played hard and we knew in this building they are a tough team,” Onsted coach Brad Maska said of Columbia. “We wanted to come out and force our will inside. We wanted to take care of business. With the size advantage we have, it’s stupid if we don’t get going inside.” And they did. Adrien Sharp’s JTV Chili Recipe 2016 Serves: 20 Ingredients 2 (29 ounce) cans tomato sauce 2 (28 ounce) cans peeled and diced tomatoes 2 cups diced onion 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning 2 pounds spicy sausage 3 pounds lean ground turkey 1 (32 ounce) bottle hickory smoke barbeque sauce 1/2 cup spicy chili powder 4 (15.25 ounce) cans kidney beans, undrained 2 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, chopped Directions In a large pot or over medium heat, combine tomato sauce, tomatoes, onion and Italian seasoning. In the same skillet over medium heat, cook sausage until brown. Drain and stir into the pot. In the same skillet over medium heat, cook the turkey until brown. Drain and stir into the pot. Defensive effort has given way to lengthy win streak for Columbia Central girls hoops By Mike Moore Staff Writer Brooklyn – After a 1-2 start to the season, there was reason for concern. This was supposed to be a strong year, and even though the roster contained just eight names, this was supposed to be a winning team. And then, something happened. Or, something clicked. However you want to describe it, the results since for the Columbia Central girls basketball team speak for themselves. Three games in, a 1-2 record. Since then, well, 7-0. “A lot of little different things happened. It’s not like one thing that we did or didn’t do,” coach David McDevitt said. “I mean, we had five girls return, but three new girls who were young and new to the team.
