Kiwanis Club of Jackson Offers College Scholarships to Local High School Seniors

Jackson, Michigan — The Kiwanis Club of Jackson is now accepting applications for college scholarships. Applicants must live in Jackson County, graduate from a Jackson County high school in the spring (or be home-schooled students who live in Jackson County), and plan to attend full-time a college or university within Jackson County (Baker College-Jackson, Jackson College or Spring Arbor University). They must also show success in high school and exemplify the Kiwanis standards through extra-curricular activities and volunteer opportunities, as well as work experience if applicable.   Find more details, as well as the scholarship application, at www.jacksonkiwanis.com. The application deadline is Friday, March 25, 2016 at 5 p.m. The Kiwanis Club of Jackson will announce the four recipients in the spring. Each will receive a one-time grant of $1,000. A method to the (schedule) madness

Somewhat average record is byproduct of much bigger goals for Grass Lake girls   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Grass Lake – At first look, this is a 6-4 team and one that was third in the Cascades Conference heading into play Tuesday night.   “But if you look a little closer, you’ll see just what we’ve done with the schedule,” Grass Lake girls basketball coach Jeremy Davies said about his squad. “We tried to ramp up our schedule this year in order to prepare ourselves better for the long run.”   The Warriors started the season with a 55-42 loss to Northwest, a team that’s 6-1.   Other losses came to Pittsford (9-0), Napoleon (7-0) and a 44-43 setback to Manchester (6-2).   That’s a combined 28-3 record of teams who have found a way to top Grass Lake entering Tuesday night.   The Warriors still have games scheduled with Ypsilanti Arbor Prep (9-1) and Blissfield (8-1) before the season is out.   “This is something that prepares you, I feel,” Davies said. “When you play a lesser team and win by 40, or whatever, I don’t think that does anything for either team.”   And more than…

Ice fishing tournament moved to Wamplers Lake

   BROOKLYN, Mich. - Area angler Zach Bivins just smiled when it was announced last February that the Midwest Open Ice Fishing tournament would be held at Devils Lake in 2016. “We love that lake,” Bivins said with a big grin on his face. That grin may have disappeared last Friday when it was announced that the 2016 tournament would be moved to Wamplers Lake because of poor ice conditions at Devils Lake. “Wamplers Lake is safe enough already and should be ready for the Jan. 31 event,” tournament director Tom Knutson of Knutson’s Recreation said. “We had 4 inches of ice last week.” Knutson said Wamplers Lake – unlike Devils Lake – is in a bowl and it is round in shape. “Wamplers does not have a lot of points that can separate with warm temperatures,” Knutson said. “The wind lays in a bowl and helps it freeze.” Last year Steve and Brian Romsek of the Grand Rapids area took home the top prize of $20,100 by catching 5.36 pounds of crappies and bluegills. Spring Arbor’s Kevin Smith named Crossroads League Field Athlete of the Week

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University’s Kevin Smith has earned his third career Crossroads League Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honor following his outstanding performance at the Saginaw Valley State University Classic on Friday.   Smith earned a third place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 43’ 1.75” (6.74 meters), which ranks as the fifth-best mark in SAU history. The sophomore from Battle Creek, Michigan also grabbed fifth place in the long jump, hitting a distance of 22’ 1.50” (13.15 meters).   Smith currently ranks 12th in the NAIA in the long jump and 24th in the triple jump.   In addition to his success in the field events, Smith also ran a leg of 4x400 meter relay. The Cougars would go on to take first place in the race with a time of 3:23.27 – the third-fastest performance ever at SAU.   Smith has already hit a qualifying mark for the 2016 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships in the heptathlon.   Spring Arbor will return to action at the Aquinas College Quad-Meet on Friday, Jan. 22 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Panthers flex road muscle

Western overwhelms sluggish Lumen team 52-34 for ‘huge’ win on the road   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – This was dominance, in every sense of the word.   From the opening tip, to the final buzzer. From outside the arc, to inside the paint.   It was a luau in the stands and a celebration at the bench.   And for the first time since, “I don’t even know when,” as coach Ryan Mulnix would say afterwards, this was Western’s night to shine against the Titans.   “It’s huge,” Mulnix said after his guys rolled past Lumen Christi 52-34 Friday night at Lumen. The Panthers hadn’t beaten Lumen since December of 2007. “It’s a rival. It’s at their place. We’ve had a few tough losses these past few games, but tonight, the effort was there. Napoleon’s Adam LaRoe becomes SAU’s first Men’s Bowling signee

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men’s bowling program made history on Wednesday afternoon when it signed its first-ever recruit in Adam LaRoe from Jackson, Michigan.   LaRoe, a two-handed bowler, comes to Spring Arbor after a highly successful career at Napoleon High School which culminated in a Division 3 state singles championship. He anchored the Pirates that season with a 206 average and was rewarded with a Detroit Free Press Dream Team selection. In addition to receiving Dream Team honors, LaRoe was a two-time All-State and three-time All-Conference performer. He also has two 300 games to his credit.   “What a great opportunity it is to work with such a talented young man,” said head men’s bowling coach Mike Hall. “Two-handed bowling is on the rise and Adam is one of the best. He is constantly working to improve to improve his game, which makes him a great asset to the team.”   While attending SAU, LaRoe intends to major in accouting.   The 2016-17 academic year will be the inaugural season of competition for the Spring Arbor men’s and women’s bowling programs. The teams will practice and compete at Airport Lanes Bowling Center in Jackson, Michigan.
