Nite Lite Reopens in Downtown Jackson

By Alex Cash Staff Writer Jackson, MI - After a waiting period with an unknown end date, patrons excitedly dined in the newly reopened Nite Lite Restaurant in Downtown Jackson. After nearly five months of being unsure whether this downtown staple would reopen for business, the wait is now over. New owners Joe and Jill Brandeberry, were looking for a change after they sold their staffing company in January of this year. They knew Mary Drake, Nite Lite’s founder and were friends of the family. It was evident to them that she had a great business established, so it made the decision an easier one. Being a part of downtown felt like the right next challenge for them. “We like the downtown and we like what is going on down here. We want to be part of the family,” said Brandeberry. He said the menu is remaining the same for now so that people who loved and depended on the menu can experience the same favorites. Over time, he plans to add some new specialties to mix it up. By Gary Kalahar (Photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports) Staff Writer As Judy Rector sat out her sophomore season on the Hanover-Horton High School track and field team with an injury, one of her coaches encouraged her to learn something from the experience. It’s pretty clear she was listening, and learning. Months later, Rector was back competing for the Comets’ cross country team with a new attitude, a clearer sense of purpose and a stronger determination. That propelled her to all-state honors in cross country, and she has kept up the pace this track season, emerging as one of the top middle-distance runners in the state. Talk to the Hanover-Horton junior now about missing last spring with a painful rib condition, and one word continues to pop up. “I’m just really grateful to be able to compete,” Rector says. “I’ve always loved running, but they say time away from things makes the return that much sweeter. Pick Your Poison at Poison Frog Brewery

By Alex Cash Staff Writer JACKSON - Poison Frog Brewery is not just any name chosen for the two-year-old establishment on Horton Road. Upon entry, patrons can look at the colorful, live, poison frogs for which its name was deliberately picked. “It was a chance I had wanted to take for 20 years, to get into the poison frog hobby and I finally pulled the trigger. If we were going to have a Poison Frog Brewery then we needed to have poison frogs,” said owner, Phil Wilcox. Wilcox found that the largest purveyor of poison frogs in North America was a fellow Jackson High School graduate. Josh’s Frogs, out of Owosso, helped get him into the hobby. Poison Frog Brewery was the moniker of Wilcox’s former home brewing project. At the same time that he was learning home beer brewing, he was learning to illustrate on computers using Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Frogs just jumped onto the beer labels he was learning to create for bottling his home brews. It’s the unique setting that Wilcox believes sets his brewery apart from the others in town. Inosencio reaches new heights for Western

And if anyone doubts he can reach them, well, they probably don’t know him very well. Inosencio has his eyes on several significant achievements before he finishes his senior season as a pole vaulter on the Western High School track and field team. A look at how quickly he has progressed, and a conversation with him regarding the pole vault, is all that’s needed to see that his aim is realistic. “Alex definitely has the talent to meet his goals,” said Jerry Sessions, coach at Landon Athletics, a club dedicated to the pole vault where Inosencio has trained for the last year and a half. “His biggest attribute is his positivity. If he continues to do what he’s doing, with hard work, he will achieve all his goals.” Actually, the first two goals are already checked off. Photo Courtesy of MHSAA: Roberts pictured in a 1987 Media Interview EAST LANSING, Mich. – April 24 – John E. “Jack” Roberts, who has served as Executive Director of the Michigan High School Athletic Association since the fall of 1986, will retire in August. Roberts will conclude his tenure as the second-longest serving full-time Executive Director during the MHSAA’s 94-year history. He is the fourth person to serve that leadership role full time, following Charles E. Forsythe (1931-42, 1945-68), Allen W. Bush (1968-78) and Vern L. Norris (1978-86). Roberts currently is also the nation’s longest-serving Executive Director of a state high school athletic association. The MHSAA has enjoyed continued growth under Roberts’ guidance, particularly in the number of Michigan high school students participating in athletics and in the number of MHSAA-sponsored tournament sports available to them. BROOKLYN, Mich. – The 50 Years of Racing Exhibit presented by Consumers Energy will feature Michigan International Speedway memorabilia and a special display of cars that once raced on the two-mile oval. The first three cars added to the 50 Years of Racing Exhibit will represent the IndyCar Series and the International Race of Champions Series presented by Consumers Energy. “We are excited to add historic cars to our 50 Years of Racing Exhibit that the best drivers once competed in at Michigan International Speedway,” track President Rick Brenner said. “We can’t wait for our fans to visit the exhibit and witness the speedway’s rich history.
