With a week off from school, parents may be looking for interesting things to keep their child busy and entertained for the week of vacation. For those staying in Jackson, look no further than Funday’s Family Fun Café. April 2nd, marks the first year of business for Funday’s. Owners Jenny and Drew Cochran have enjoyed their first year of business and learned a lot this past year. “It's been fun, exciting, satisfying and overwhelming all at the same time! It's been a rollercoaster ride and we've been learning a ton about what works well, what doesn't, what we need to change and what we could add into the mix,” said Jenny. Trip to state finals highlighted Carroll’s season and his nod as JTV Sports Coach of the Year

By Mike Moore                                                            (Photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports) Staff Writer   Jackson — The question was a simple one, yet the answer anything but.   It had only been a couple days since the 2018 playoff run came to a close when Northwest girls basketball coach Ryan Carroll was asked to describe what the journey was like.   He laughed.   “I really don’t know how to explain it,” he said simply. “I don’t know if validation is the word, but when you look back at the time and effort that goes into this, for seven years we’ve kind of been building off the previous year and set our goals even higher.”   Carroll orchestrated the most successful season in program history this winter, taking the Mounties to the Class B state finals.   And now, he’s been selected as the  JTV Sports Coach of the Year.   “Coaching this team was just awesome,” Carroll said. “To have the talent we did, and go into every single night knowing we…

Northwest and Hamilton girls basketball teams set to clash in Class B quarters

By Mike Moore                                                         (Photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports) Staff Writer   Marshall — With every passing round, every new trophy presented, and every sun rising on another game day, the stakes get higher as the stage gets brighter.   For the first time in program history, the Northwest girls basketball squad has the leading role in a quarterfinal performance tonight.   “In the moment, this really means we have a chance to play for a spot in the final four,” coach Ryan Carroll summed up. “That’s what every kid wants to do when the season starts. That should be the goal, and we have a chance for that tonight. To have that chance, needing one win, it’s pretty exciting. First Congregational Church Spreads Warmth

By Alex Cash Staff Writer “How can we help those in the community, who are cold, find warmth?” With a simple question asked, Reverend Kerry Taylor-Snyder of First Congregational Church UCC Jackson began what he calls the “Warming Board” outside his church in downtown Jackson. Taylor-Snyder said the idea was inspired by a project in Boston in which people wrapped scarves around tree trunks to aid those who are homeless or out in the cold. Loving the idea, he wanted to apply it to his own community. To change the project to better suit Jackson, Taylor-Snyder decided to use the church’s historic sign facing North Jackson Street to make items available. Plastic bags have helped to keep the items dry, as they are kept outside, and simple clothes pins hold them to the board. At first only hats, gloves, and scarves were being given. Then someone in his congregation decided to add socks to keep peoples’ feet warm. Soon, the idea expanded to coats. The idea was announced to the church’s board of trustees and to the congregation at large. At this time, Taylor-Snyder says items began pouring in. On Sunday, April 15th, 36 students of the Lumen Christi Cantoribus Choir will be living a dream by performing at Carnegie Hall. “It has been the greatest gift to me as an educator to see our students take the skills they have learned and share their gifts with the world,” says Justin Marcero, choir leader at Lumen Christi. The young performers, some lifelong musicians, are very honored by this invitation. “Receiving the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall is once in a lifetime experience and a lifelong personal dream of mine. I’ve been a musician all my life and between my love for orchestra and vocal performance, music has made a huge impact in who I am as a person,” said junior choir member Hailey Rogers. Michigan Center girls take aim at second district in a row

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Michigan Center — A team on a roll or a team on a mission.   Take your pick in trying to describe the Michigan Center girls basketball squad right now.   Or just maybe its both.   The Cardinals have been white hot of late, haven;t lost in 2018, and after cruising past Jonesville by 18 in the district opener, are riding a 13-game win streak.   Now the goal is finding No. 14.   “We’re excited and looking forward to it,” coach Joe Lusk said Thursday night about Friday’s Class B district final.   The Cardinals (19-2) head to Adrian to take on Onsted (17-5) at 7 p.m. with a ticket to the regional round on the line.   “We scrimmaged them earlier in the year, so we know they are pretty big in the middle and solid all around,” Lusk said of Onsted. “But we feel we match up well against them.”   Asked what the key to victory might be, Lusk was quick to answer.   “Guard play,” he said. “It’s going to come down to how they, or we, handle the pressure. Jackson basketball looking for continued success as playoffs approach

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson — If timing is indeed everything, well, the timing is certainly right for the Jackson boys basketball team.   After a season of ups and downs, and alternating wins and losses, it just may be that the Vikings have found their stride.   Just in time.   “We’re playing better as a team, and that’s the key,” coach Dan Crowley said Wednesday night. “We’re spreading the floor. We’re sharing the ball. We’re rebounding. We’re doing the things you need to do to win.”   And win the Vikings have of late, four times in their past five games, to be exact.   Once 7-7 on the year, Jackson is 11-8 entering Thursday’s regular season finale against rival, Lumen Christi.   “You always want to be playing better now, and that’s what we’re doing,” Crowley added. “The last loss was just one of those nights where we didn’t have it. Napoleon’s Weatherspoon eyes state title, undefeated season

He hesitates, says he isn’t sure, asking how many matches Lelund won. So much for the pressure of following in big brother’s footsteps. The fact that Weatherspoon is unaware of his brother’s school record is perhaps a good indication that he is not concerned about – or at least has come to terms with – living up to the high standards set on the wrestling mat by two of his brothers. “I got over the pressure part,” said Weatherspoon, a junior who acknowledges he might have felt the burden more in previous years. “You have to get past the pressure.” Still, there is one achievement of brothers Lelund and Jason that Ethan would certainly like to match. After 19 wins, Northwest girls shift focus to postseason

By Mike Moore                                                  (Photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports) Staff Writer   Jackson — This was a team one win away from perfection.   Now it’s a team striving for it from now until the end of the girls basketball tournament.   The Northwest girls hoops squad will begin the 2018 postseason tonight at Eaton Rapids against Parma Western in a district semifinal.   But first, a quick look back at what was the marathon regular season.   “It was a pretty special for us, in a number of ways,” coach Ryan Carroll said of a 19-1 finish. “Obviously, the 19 wins is great and something to be proud of.
