Governor Whitmer Signs Executive Order Temporary Suspending Requirements Regarding Licensing and Regulations of Emergency Medical Services

(April 7, 2020 6:37 PM) Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-39, temporarily suspending requirements regarding licensing and regulation of emergency medical services. Executive Order 2020-39 takes effect immediately and will remain in place until the end of the governor’s declared emergency or until otherwise rescinded. “Our paramedics are on the front lines every day helping us mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in Michigan, and we must do everything we can to help them do their jobs efficiently and effectively,” said Governor Whitmer. “Given the rapid increase in Michiganders who require emergency medical treatment and the scarcity of medical supplies and PPE, it's important that we give emergency medical services the ability to respond flexibly to these new challenges. I will also continue to work around the clock to secure more PPE for our first responders and health care professionals across the state. We will get through this together.” As a result of this order, Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services will not be required to conduct annual random inspections of life support vehicles or annual inspections of life support agencies. Instead, a life support vehicle or agency will only be inspected when the department has reason to…

(April 7, 2020 5:23 PM) For those who are newly sober, or have been in recovery for a decade or more, choosing sobriety is a daily decision. One that requires personal awareness, thoughtful preparation and a strong support system. But with the current restrictions in place surrounding COVID-19, people in recovery are finding themselves feeling disconnected or alone as they maintain sobriety. “Connections with others are a tremendous source of support and strength for those in recovery. With 12-step groups being moved online and social distancing guidelines preventing meeting with sponsors and friends in person, people will have to become creative and extra vigilant about prioritizing their recovery,” says Christine Reeves, LMSW, CAADC, a licensed therapist who specializes in treating patients with addiction at Henry Ford Maplegrove Center. Any time routines are interrupted, or stress and anxiety increases, people are at greater risk for relapse, says Reeves. This can include personal, relationship, work or financial stress. If you find yourself with thoughts of drinking or using other drugs, there are things you can do to reset your thinking. She offers the following advice for those in recovery: 1. Make a plan to stay connected to your support network. Write down a schedule outlining when…
