Casey is First All-State Athlete at JPEC

Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Jackson Prep & Early College runner Daniel Casey proclaimed himself as the king of the first mile at local cross country meets. Unfortunately for the JPEC runner, there are 3.1 miles in a standard high school cross country event. A little coaching taught him the value of pace. That paid off on Saturday as Casey finished 23rd at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 state cross country finals at Michigan International Speedway. He finished the 5K course in 17 minutes, 33 seconds, becoming the school’s first all-state athlete. The top 30 runners in each division earn all-state honors. A year ago, Casey finished 65th at the state meet. He ran nearly 30 seconds faster on Saturday during a warm and breezy day at MIS. “We came up with a strategy to start out slow and catch runners in the end,” Casey said. “If you ran smart today, you could take advantage of that (temperatures in the 70s).”…

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (November 7, 2020 7:11 PM) Ten high school cross country runners finished in the top 30 in their respective races at the Michigan High School Athletic Association cross country finals at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday. The top 30 in each division earn all-state honors. COVID-19 restrictions split the divisions into two races – one with teams who finished first or second in their respective regional races and another for the third-place teams at regionals and individual qualifiers. The MHSAA was trying to limit the number of athletes in each race. Fans were also restricted to the grandstands, items like tents (where people would congregate) were banned, and teams had a checkout and check-in times. Here is a listing off all of the Jackson Country runners who participated in the two-day event. Ellis Leads Leslie to Invitational Win

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Leslie High School senior Haley Ellis has some high expectations this season. She also has some added inspiration. Ellis showed that she is living up to some of those expectations. She won the Leslie Blackhawk Invitational at home on Wednesday with a time of 21 minutes, 24 seconds. While the time isn’t earth shattering, she won by more than 30 seconds. Winning the race helped Leslie win the team championship at the invitational. The Blackhawks won the girls’ event with 38 points, Manchester was second with 55, Lakewood scored 59, and Charlotte 69. The results were nearly the same in the boys’ event. Leslie won the event with 34 points, Manchester placed second at 49 points, and Charlotte was third with 84. Local teams East Jackson placed fifth (162), Jackson Prep and Early College was sixth (173), and Napoleon finished ninth (200). Ellis finished 39th at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state finals at Michigan International Speedway last year. The top 30 earn all-state honors. The road may…

Napoleon Dominates Kuenner Invitational on Friday

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Perhaps no words can best describe the 2020 cross country season like those of Napoleon High School senior Alex Darnell. Darnell said he and his teammate run each meet like “it is our last one.” With COVID-19 and the coronavirus hanging over everyone’s head, it could be. Napoleon won both races on Friday at the Kuenner Cross Country Invitational at Addison High School on Friday. The boys’ team easily won with a score of 32 – placing all five runners in the top 14 in the event. Morenci was second in the boys’ event with 83, East Jackson placed third scoring 92, Jackson Prep and Early College was fourth with 99, Northwest scored 114, Onsted was sixth at 128, and the host school scored 168. Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 district volleyball at Vandercook Lake. Grass Lake defeated Napoleon 3-1, and Michigan Center swept East Jackson 3-0. Grass Lake will face Jackson Prep on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at VCL. The Jayhawks will face Michigan Center in the second district semifinal at VCL.
