Western softball team clicking on all facets, runs out to 17-2 start to the season   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Parma — Tonya Bassett is being spoiled right now, and she knows it.   The Western softball coach has a pair of dominant pitchers, a defense holding its own, and an offense slugging roughly 12 runs every time out.   The result so far is a 17-2 overall record as of Sunday night, and a team taking aim at some lofty goals moving forward.   “We’re really building on last year,” Bassett said. The Panthers were 25-14 in 2015. “We have a lot of returning girls, and we’re playing exceptionally well right now.”   And, as is usually the case come spring time success, most of that winning starts with the efforts coming from the circle.   Taylor Nichols is half of a dominant duo of pitching for Panthers, and in her most recent effort this weekend, earned the win in a 3-1 decision against Quincy in which she struck out 18 batters and allowed one hit.   The lone hit prevented what could have been her fourth no-hitter of the season.   And then there’s junior Kortney…

One more go of it

Riggleman promises to enjoy final regular season home date with Spring Arbor baseball   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Spring Arbor — In a sport like baseball, a consistent routine is as much a fabric of the game as red laces and white chalk.   For the better part of 40 years, when Sam Riggleman and his team hosted an opponent, he’s tried to keep the same routine each time out.   On Friday, that just may the therapeutic measure Riggleman needs.   “We’re going to go out, get the tarps off, prep the field and try to stick to the schedule,” Riggleman said Thursday night about a 2 p.m. Friday doubleheader at home against Goshen College. “I don’t feel like anything magical is going on right now.”   Maybe not magical, but certainly monumental.   The pair of games for Spring Arbor will be the final regular season home games ever for Riggleman, a Hall of Famer with the Cougars who is set to retire at the end of the season.  Riggleman has been the head man at Spring Arbor since 2005, guiding the Cougars to three regular season conference championships, two conference tournament titles and five NAIA national…

Spring Arbor Track & Field completes final tuneup before CL Championships

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – In the final tuneup before the Crossroads League Championships, the Spring Arbor University men’s and women’s track & field teams took part in the Otterbein University Twilight Invitational on Friday.   Both squads finished in third place in the team standings with the women totaling 117 points and the Cougar men scoring 108.5 points, finishing only half of a point behind Otterbein for second place.   Leading the way for Spring Arbor on the women’s side was sophomore Bethany Kuenzer. Column: Time for the Captain to come home

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   It was a dominant performance in every way, from shots on goal to legitimate scoring chances.   And has been the case for the better part of the past five years, the final result was oh-so-painfully predictable.   Another playoff game lost by one goal.   Another season ended in the first round.   Red Wings fans near and far knew this was coming. From the time the team backed into the playoffs, until that fateful goal with just minutes remaining in Game 5, this was a flawed team from the top on down.   Sure, the Wings lost three games in this series by a total of three goals.   And that’s the frustrating and telling part of what needs to happen next.   Mike Illitch went bold last fall, letting Tigers General Manager Dave Dombrowski go about an hour (almost) after the 2015 MLB trade deadline.   Just after Dowbrowski revamped the Tigers with prospects, mind you.   It’s time to do the same with Wings GM Ken Holland.   There’s a certain bit of pain in typing that sentence.   Holland is the man who essentially introduced me to what the…
