Lumen boys track not thinking about last year, focused on regional

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson — The defending Division 3 state champs are about to begin the 2016 postseason, and as Mike Woolsey said Friday morning, repeating is the furthest thing from his guys minds right now.   “Our main goal is to do well, and get as many guys qualified as we can,” he said of Saturday’s regional event. “This is also a great chance for some younger guys to gain some valuable experience. … For us, thinking about last year really doesn’t make any sense. This is a different team. The goal now is to get as many guys as possible with their best performances.”   Lumen will be joined by 16 other teams Saturday at Quincy in the regional event.   Action is set to begin around 9 a.m.   “We’ve really improved as the year’s gone on,” Woolsey said of his guys. “These are athletes coming along. We’re getting a lot of what we need to right now, and that’s key.”   Last year’s state-title team had depth and a ton of high-level talent that carried it 44 points at the final, seven better than Hillsdale.   “But we graduated a lot of those guys,…

ARCA Racing Series debuts new body style at MIS

BROOKLYN, Mich. (May 19, 2016) — The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards got an early start to the racing season at Michigan International Speedway. Nearly 20 entered an open test in the Irish Hills to test the new composite body cars the series is running in 2016. The test served as the first practice day for the teams on a superspeedway in this type of car. It will make its racing debut at Pocono in June. The ARCA racing series returns to MIS on June 10 for the Corrigan Oil 200. And the drivers at MIS on Thursday were already looking forward. “The first impression is that the car drives great and it has a ton of grip so that is the most important thing,” Tom Hessert said. “It looks awesome and it will be more in-line with the other cars when we come back.” The teams conducted a three-hour session in the morning and another four-hour test session in the afternoon. Chase Briscoe, the current points leader in the series, only got four laps in during the morning session, but he was impressed. “It is definitely fast,” Briscoe said. “It has a ton of grip. I think we…

John Moffitt takes over boys basketball program at Northwest

New Northwest basketball coach says success is on the way   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson — He vowed to make a difference, to take a struggling culture and turn it into a success story.   Certainly not overnight, or in a one-year span, but with a bit of patience and plenty of hard work, John Moffitt said the Northwest boys basketball program will find itself on competitive footing before long.   Now the journey begins for the first-year Mounties coach.   “I’m very happy to be here,” Moffitt said Monday night, a few days after he was officially named head coach of the boys varsity team. “I’ve taught in this district and been around basketball in this area forever. To me, there’s so many great things going on at Northwest, and having the chance to teach and coach in this district together puts me in a position to be effective with these kids.”   Moffitt’s no stranger to the game, the Jackson area, or Northwest, for that matter.   Moffitt starred at Litchfield until graduating in 1994, then played at Spring Arbor University until 1999.   His coaching career began shortly after that.   He coached varsity…
