Spring Arbor Softball rallies to finish off doubleheader sweep of Saint Francis

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team scored 11 runs over the final three innings to erase an early deficit and conclude a doubleheader sweep of the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) in its home opener on Monday afternoon.   The Cougars defeated Saint Francis 3-2 in the first game before rallying back to topple the visitors 11-5 in the nightcap.   The wins improved Spring Arbor to 13-9 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the Crossroads League, while Saint Francis dropped to 5-7 on the season with a mark of 1-3 in league play.   After a scoreless first inning, Saint Francis threatened in the second with back-to-back hits to open the frame. However, senior pitcher Kaitlyn Sinclair struck out a batter and induced a harmless groundout before freshman Sydney Taylor made a great catch in right field to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.   Spring Arbor plated the game’s first run in the home half of the second with an RBI hit by Beka Bentz. Liz Campeau would also come around to score in the inning on a USF error.   Saint Francis managed to tie the game after pushing across a run in…

The road to East Lansing

Hanover-Horton looks to get past Loyola in Class C quarterfinal round   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Horton – The field is down to eight, and with one more win, the Hanover-Horton boys basketball team will return to the Class C semifinals for the second season in a row.   But on Tuesday night, the journey to a potential Thursday game in East Lansing must make a detour through Tecumseh and over a powerful speed bump in the form of Detroit Loyola.   “And that’s a very good team,” Comets coach Chad Mortimer said simply about the 7 p.m. tilt.   Hanover (23-2) picked up a second consecutive regional title last week, using key defensive stops to upend Pewamo-Westphalia 58-49.   The win was the 17th in a row for the Comets, who reached last year’s semifinal round before falling to Flint Beecher.   Loyola’s tournament a year ago was drastically shorter. The Bulldogs were ousted in the district opener, but have more than rebounded this year, building a 20-5 record so far that includes the program’s first ever regional title.   “They are very good,” Mortimer said. “Some of the teams they’ve beaten up on are some big,…

A season and group to be proud of

Smoyer praises his Napoleon girls after one-loss season on the hardwood   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Napoleon – The girls basketball state finals were played Saturday at the Breslin Center.   By all accounts, Steve Smoyer and his Napoleon squad had plans of being there, and for the better part of the winter, made a point to show they just may be good enough to do so.   And that’s just part of what makes a single loss so tough to accept, especially when it ended the Pirates’ season.   “It’s really a mix of emotions when it ended,” Smoyer said of the season, which wrapped up last week in a 40-30 loss to Ypsilanti Arbor Prep in a Class C regional final. “In the end, if we had one loss this year, it was going to be a big loss because of where it was.”   The Pirates ended the year 24-1, and roughly a week after that lone loss, Smoyer had nothing but praise for his girls and the season they put together.   “I’ve probably never been more proud of this team than I was in that game,” Smoyer said of the loss. “Especially defensively. We…

Continue the run

Hanover uses 11-0 run to capture second regional title in a row   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Horton – A new year, almost an entirely new team, but the Hanover-Horton boys basketball team is enjoying some of the exact same accomplishments as last winter.   The most recent came Wednesday night as the Comets used an 11-0 run in the second half to get past Pewamo-Westphalia 58-49 to capture a Class C regional title for the second time in as many seasons.   “It means a lot,” coach Chad Mortimer said. “Mostly, it means the season continues. That’s always the goal.”   Hanover trailed 8-2 right out of the gate, but slowly battled back into the game.   Near the end of the third, the Comets trailed by five before an 11-0 run into the fourth quarter allowed the guys in red and white to grab the lead for good.   “That gave us some separation,” Mortimer said. “We had the lead and were able to make some plays.”   Hanover never looked back, pushing its record to 23-2 on the season while earning a trip to the quarterfinals next Tuesday.   “This group has come a long,…

A season of pride

Onsted falls in regional final, finishes 2015-16 with a 23-1 record   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Onsted – The difference between perfection and a season concluded was one, single loss.   On Wednesday night in a Class B regional final, the Onsted boys basketball team learned that lesson the hard way.   Unbeaten all winter, the Wildcats surrendered a fourth-quarter lead to River Rouge, eventually falling 49-44 at the Dundee High final.   “I really thought we played well defensively. We played well for three quarters,” coach Brad Maska said. “In the fourth they were able to limit possessions. They stalled a bit, and we weren’t able to get inside as much as we needed to. We also had some good looks, and we didn’t make as many shots as we needed.”   Onsted led 40-38 entering the fourth, but then found just four points in the final eight minutes.   River Rouge took the lead with a little more than two minutes remaining.   Onsted trailed 47-44 with 15 seconds remaining but couldn’t get a 3-pointer to drop.   Austin Davis, who scored 46 and 42 points in each of the past two games, respectively, was held…
