Davis’ 42 Carries Onsted to Regional

(photo courtesy Gretchen Maska) Onsted starts strong, rolls past Adrian 67-40 to claim Class B district title  By Mike Moore Staff Writer Brooklyn – In a figurative, and almost literal sense, this was David taking on Goliath. And when March rolls around, fairy tales often find ways to play themselves out on the hardwood. Well, this wasn’t going to be one of those nights. Austin Davis was a man among boys Friday night, as the Onsted senior poured in 42 points while guiding his squad to a 67-40 victory over Adrian in a Class B district final at Columbia Central. And it really wasn’t even that close. “It’s great. We’ve worked a lot, all year, for this,” Davis said of the district crown. It’s the second in a row for Onsted. “It’s a tremendous feeling. We started a little slow, but once we fought through it and got going, everyone had a great night.” “We talked all week about focusing on one game at a time,” coach Brad Maska said. “We wanted to go 1-0 on Monday, 1-0 on Wednesday and 1-0 tonight. To go back to back with these districts is a great accomplishment.” There was little secret to…

An opportunity to cherish

Michigan Center has chance to end Hanover streak, earn first district since 1998   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Michigan Center – It’s been 14 years of unbridled consistency in the district round for the Hanover-Horton boys basketball team.   Fourteen years, 14 district crowns.   The Comets are seeking No. 15 tonight when they travel to take on Michigan Center in a 7 p.m. Class C final, though Travis Gaddy and his guys certainly want something to say about that.   “It’s a great opportunity for these kids,” Gaddy said Friday morning. “They’re excited. They’ve never had a chance to do something like this before.”   In fact, as Gaddy pointed out, most of his team wasn’t even born the last time the Cardinals earned a district trophy.   “It’s been a while,” he said of a drought that’s lasted since 1998. “When this staff took over six years ago, we talked about building a program, and we wanted to model it after Hanover’s consistency. We’re starting to get the classes we were counting on to give us that chance. This is an opportunity to get a title, and hopefully start that consistent trend.”   The teams met…

Albion 2, Wisconsin Lutheran 0 Albion cooled off a Wisconsin Lutheran team that came in with a 5-1 record. Monica Brugnoni (pictured above) fired a six-hitter for the first shutout of her collegiate career and the first for Albion since a 4-0 victory over Kalamazoo College on April 9, 2014. Her 10 strikeouts were a career-high and she walked two. The Warriors stranded a runner at third in the fifth and had two runners on base in the seventh. Albion scored its runs in the first. Julia Anderson hit a leadoff single and Elena Luce was hit by a pitch with one out. They advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch and scored on Brugnoni’s two-out single to left field. The Britons…
