Western Advances to Regional Volleyball Final

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Last week Western High School senior Abi Wilcoxson broke the school record for most kills in a career. On Tuesday, Wilcoxson proved she is more than just a middle hitter on the volleyball court. Wilcoxson and six other seniors led Western to the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 regional volleyball final with a 25-18, 26-24, and 25-13 win over Haslett at Onsted High School. The Panthers will face Lake Odessa Lakewood in the regional final Thursday at OHS. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Lakewood was ranked No. 2 in a coach’s poll just before district play began. Wilcoxson got her share of kills in the win, but showed a bit of versatility that most middle hitters don’t have. On one play Wilcoxson went up for a big spike, had it blocked right back to her about waist high, and had the wherewithal to hit the volleyball with her left hand. Two Teams Win District Titles, Three Others Play Tonight

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Two teams won Michigan High School Athletic Association district titles and three others have a chance tonight. District tournaments will conclude tonight (Friday) at a number of locations around the area. On Thursday, Vandercook Lake defeated Grass Lake in three sets, 25-21, 25-13, and 25-19. The Jayhawks pulled ahead in game two as Morgan LeFaive served a number of points in the win. Kate Leach finished with 14 kills, Kaely Howard finished with 30 digs, and LeFaive tallied 19 assists for the Jayhawks. Vandercook Lake will face the winner of Dansville/Bath in the first round of the regional at Leslie High School. The semifinal contest is scheduled on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Northwest defeated Okemos 3-2, getting off to a quick start with 12 consecutive points in game one. The Mounties will play in the Battle Creek Lakeview regional against the winner of St. John/Grand Ledge. The regional semifinal is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
