Defense Leads Onsted to D-6 Semifinals

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Logan Robarge and the Onsted High School varsity football team’s defense received an early Christmas present last Friday during the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 6 regional football final at Hillsdale. Forty days early to be exact. The Wildcats made all of the right moves in a 12-0 win over Hillsdale last week to advance to the D-6 state semifinals. It is the first semifinal appearance since advancing to the Class CC finals in 1993. Hillsdale finishes the season with an 11-1 mark while Onsted improves to 10-2. The Wildcats are riding a nine-game winning streak heading into the semifinal matchup against the Montrose/Monroe St. Mary – to be played on Saturday. It appeared as if the game would be scoreless in the first half until Robarge grabbed an interception and raced 60 yards for a score with 4 seconds remaining in the opening half. Vandercook Falls in Five Sets in Regional Volleyball Final

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Two high school volleyball teams with a wait-until-next-year mentality – until recently – met for the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 regional title in Leslie. In the end, the team with the biggest hitter won. Hudson High School defeated Vandercook Lake in five sets, 25-13, 25-18, 12-25, 19-15, and 15-10, at Leslie High School on Thursday night. With the win, the Tigers claimed the school’s first regional title after winning the first district volleyball title in 22 years. Vandercook Lake won its first district title in 35 years in 2018 and repeated this year. Hudson advances to play in the quarterfinals Tuesday at Adrian Madison High School against Monroe Catholic Central at 6 p.m. Vandercook finishes the season at 35-10-4. “These girls have worked hard to get here,” Hudson Coach Shelly Hoard said. “They are good at performing in their roles.” Vandercook Lake Coach Kenny Brokaw said the Jayhawks did not show up until the third set, but proved they were…
Western Advances to Regional Volleyball Final

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Last week Western High School senior Abi Wilcoxson broke the school record for most kills in a career. On Tuesday, Wilcoxson proved she is more than just a middle hitter on the volleyball court. Wilcoxson and six other seniors led Western to the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 regional volleyball final with a 25-18, 26-24, and 25-13 win over Haslett at Onsted High School. The Panthers will face Lake Odessa Lakewood in the regional final Thursday at OHS. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Lakewood was ranked No. 2 in a coach’s poll just before district play began. Wilcoxson got her share of kills in the win, but showed a bit of versatility that most middle hitters don’t have. On one play Wilcoxson went up for a big spike, had it blocked right back to her about waist high, and had the wherewithal to hit the volleyball with her left hand.
