Lineman Keegan Smith listens to coaches following a 42-14 win over Homer in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 7 opening district game. Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Lumen Christi Catholic High School athlete Keegan Smith thought his sports future could be in hockey. Longtime football Coach Herb Brogan had other ideas. Both are probably pretty happy now as the Titans have won three consecutive state football titles and are in the hunt for another as district football rolls around this Friday. Lumen Christi (9-0) will host Riverview Gabriel Richard (8-2) in the district final Friday at Crowley Memorial Stadium beginning at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 7 regional final at a yet-to-be-determined site. The Titans opened defense of their state title with a 42-14 win against Homer in Division 7 playoffs last Friday. Lumen Christi is playing one division lower this season – based on student enrollment at LCCHS. Smith helped lead the offensive line as the Titans rushed for more than 250 yards in the first half against Homer building a 35-0 lead. But football was not always his first love. “I…

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Four local cross country runners earned all-state honors at the Michigan High School Athletic Association state finals held Saturday at Michigan International Speedway. A muddy course led to higher than normal times at the 5,000-meter course. Runners competed in the annual state finals in 40-degree weather and occasional rain. In Division 4, Concord High School runner Skylar Thompson earned all-state honors for a third consecutive year. She finished 14th individually as a freshman and sophomore. Saturday, she finished in 19 minutes, 38 seconds finishing fifth overall. “My goal was to finish in the top seven,” Thompson said. “It was pretty muddy, but not as bad as I though. “During warmup we talked about which side of the course to run on.” In Division 3, three local runners earned all-state honors by finishing in the top 30. Lumen Christi Catholic High School runners Renae Kutcha finished 20th and Faith Smith was 22nd in 19:34 and 19:35 respectively. “I…

Comets Win State XC Title; Frohm 2nd

The Hanover-Horton High School boys’ cross country team won the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state title at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Garrett Melling of Hanover-Horton High School made a move two months ago at the Springport Invitational that somewhat surprised Coach Dean Blackledge. He took a step away from the pack and became the leader. The leader-of-the-pack mentality became contagious as everyone wanted to be the king of the hill. The result was a Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state title Saturday at Michigan International Speedway. The Comets finished with 146 points to defeat Grandville Calvin Christian (183) and Charlevoix (184). It is the second boys’ state title for Hanover-Horton in three years. “Garrett took a risk by getting out of the pack,” Blackledge said. “Then Andy (Swihart) and Dean (Reynolds) followed. “We didn’t run great today, but we were the toughest team out there who loves to compete.” Two days of rain made for a muddy track at MIS – especially in the final one kilometer. “It was a lot better out there than I thought,” Melling said of the course. “We…
