By, Gabriel Schray | JTV Sports | December 18th, 2018 Fifteen Local to Jackson Athletes made the Detroit Free Press All-State Football teams. Mick McCabe is in his 47th year at the Free Press, covering primarily high school and college athletics. The list is comprised of athletes he selected and was published to Freep.com. McCabe selected hundreds of student-athletes that participated in MHSAA football this year to eight divisions worth of teams. He then named off dozens as honorable mentions for the eight divisions- who he believed deserved a nod, even though they were not placed on a team. The 2010 Michigan Sports Writer of the Year, McCabe has won several state and national awards. In April 2014, McCabe became only the fifth sports writer inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame. This is our compilation of his local and area selections. More than anything, the point of us covering his list is to make it easy for local fans, families and friends to find the athletes who were named to the daunting all-state teams. In addition to the fifteen local athletes, there is an additional 27 area athletes, for a grand total of 42 athletes within a stones…
(Photo: Jackson High School's Fieldhouse) By, Gabriel Schray | JTV Sports | December 11th, 2018 Jackson, Michigan-- Jackson High's Boys Varsity Basketball team dipped to an even .500 on the season after losing to Ann Arbor Pioneer (57-44) at home on Tuesday night. Following a 7pm tip off, the two teams played hard right from the first whistle. Ann Arbor was coming off of a tough loss to Canton, and was prepared to bounce back. The Vikes led at the halftime break by a score of 24-23. Jackson was fueled by the electric play of Tyshan Kelley, who scored 7 first half points. He was spurred on by teammate Tyler Hunt's 6 that he added through the two periods. At one point the Pioneers were struggling, but staged a bit of a comeback egged on by Drew Lowder's 9 first half points. Lowder gave Pioneer their first lead since the start of the game just moments from the halftime break before Jackson regained the lead and held it into the break. The score would have been 35-35 going into the 4th quarter of play if Kasean Pryor had not drained two deep 3-pointers in the last 60 seconds of the…

By Gary Kalahar (Photo: Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports) JTV Sports When athletic director Mike Baisden wanted to launch a strength program last spring for Jackson Christian High School athletes, he knew who his initial recruit among the girls had to be. “I told her, ‘If you come and you’re consistent, people are going to follow you,’ ” Baisden said. “ ‘You’re a leader, and you’re going to be a leader for your teams next year.’ ” Baisden recognized the effect Bree Sanford could have on her fellow athletes – not only because of her personality, but because she already had demonstrated how much she was willing to endure to achieve her goals. Sanford has battled through two significant physical hardships to emerge as one of Jackson Christian’s top athletes in her junior year. Born with an extremely severe case of clubfoot, Sanford underwent years of surgeries and physical therapy to allow her to be active. Then, a serious knee injury kept her out of action her freshman year. “For someone who could…
