A Pair of State Champs Meet in Week 1 as Lumen Begins 2017 Season

By Mike Moore Staff Writer File Photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports  Scour the landscape of the MHSAA’s opening football weekend, and try and find a better game than Friday’s tilt between Lumen Christi and Grand Rapids West Catholic. Give up yet? For the third year in a row these two teams will open the regular season against one another. But for the first time in that span, they each do so as defending state champions. “It’s a very good game,” Lumen coach Herb Brogan said simply. “We won the first year and then they took it to us last year. I think that can be a little bit of a motivating tool.” In 2015, Lumen pulled the upset on West Catholic, a two-time defending champ at the time, with a 22-21 victory. Last year, as a three-time defending champ, West Catholic rolled to a 30-13 win. Now, the rubber match. “A game like this forced you to be at your best right away,” Lumen said of facing a team like West Catholic, which has now won four state titles in a row, taking last year’s Division 5 crown with a 43-7 win over Menominee. “Playing a team like this…

Michigan Center football ready for huge test in trip to Climax-Scotts

By Mike Moore                                                      File Photo Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports Staff Writer   Michigan Center — When the Michigan Center football team began the 2016 season against Climax-Scotts, coach Troy Allen and his guys had a pretty decent idea what they were getting in a team that went 11-1 the year before and reached the regional final in Division 8.   As Allen and his group prepare for Friday’s opener at Climax-Scotts, needless to say, they know exactly what they’re getting.   “A tough team that’s very disciplined and knows how to play at home,” Allen said of the Panthers, who went 11-1 last year as well, once again falling in the regional final. “We know how good this team is. We know they haven’t lost at home in 15 years, or whatever it is. At the same time, we feel this is a game we should be competitive in. We feel it’s a game we have a shot at winning.”        First things, first.   Climax-Scotts has made the playoffs every year since 2003,…

Vikings looking to start on the right foot with trip to Marshall

By Mike Moore                                File Photo By Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports Staff Writer   Jackson— The first week came and went, and the Jackson football team was 0-1.   That was 2016, when a loss in the season opener gave way to five wins in the final eight games, and a season ending one win shy of a playoff berth.   Scott Farley and his group isn’t about to look backwards, but, as the Vikings prep to move forward with 2017, there’s one resounding theme heading into Friday night’s tilt at Marshall.   “We want to get off on the right foot,” Farley said. “It’ so important, especially when you look at the conference we are in and the games we have coming up. With a young team, getting some momentum is going to be key.”   Separated only by a quick drive down I-94, Jackson and Marshall have never played before.   The Vikings finished 2016 with a 5-4 record and have brought back a whole stable of starters.   Marshall was 4-5 last year, and seemed to define close losses.   The Redhawks final…

Scott Denig Captures City Championship

By Gary Kalahar, JTV Sports Scott Denig knows there’s a difference between averaging 33 in his golf league and being successful in tournament play. Knows it. Understands it. And, now more than ever, appreciates it. Denig, undoubtedly possessing the physical tools to be a top-flight player, has coupled that with a better mental approach and produced a breakthrough season that he capped Saturday by capturing his first major local tournament victory. Denig defeated former champion Josh Dirlam 5-and-4 in the 36-hole final match at Cascades Golf Course. The victory ended a solid week of golf for Denig in which he never trailed at any point in his five matches. To say he came out of nowhere to win the title might be a bit of an exaggeration – but not much. Consider that he had never previously won a City Championship match, losing in the first round in his only other two appearances. That was then. This is now. “I knew I had the game. I didn’t have the mental game,” Denig said of the difference that allowed him to claim the title. Three weeks ago, Denig and Dirlam were in the final group on the same course battling for…
