But as Grass Lake softball coach Roger Cook talked about his team Thursday morning, and was asked about the district tournament that’s quickly approaching, he was quick to point out the lessons hopefully learned from last year’s quick exit. “I think we got caught looking past an Onsted team that snuck up on us,” Cook said. “They had a good game, and we were done.” And so too was a promising season with a 29-6 record. Cook and his Warriors aren’t looking too far down the road just yet in terms of the playoffs. First things first. Grass Lake, sitting at…
Western soccer team, with eight freshmen, has chance to close out I-8 title By Mike Moore Staff Writer Parma — It was a year ago the Western girls soccer team caught fire in the I-8 Conference soccer tournament and rode its hot streak to a championship game victory over Marshall. But the Panthers placed third in the I-8 standings leading into that mini-postseason, and, as second-year coach Randi Greenslade put it, “I’m not sure when we last won a regular season conference title.” Well, Greenslade and the Panthers have a chance to do just that over the next week or so. And the fun begins Friday night against No. 7-ranked Lumen Christi at 6:30 p.m. at home. “The main goal right now is to win the conference title,” Greenslade said. “We’re pretty set in doing what we do best. It’s gotten us to this point. We’re going to go out and play our game and see what happens.” It’s worked all season for the Panthers, who as of Thursday afternoon, were 6-3-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the conference, alone in first place. “We’re young but talented as a group,” Greenslade said. “Most…

Parrott has goal of building Northwest baseball into a yearly contender By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson — There’s a certain energy here, in the way he talks, the way he’s focused and, as many throughout the Northwest baseball program hope, the way Cory Parrott will build. In fact, the construction is already under way, maybe even slightly ahead of schedule. A year ago the Mounties won seven games, but under Parrott, a first-year varsity skipper, the guys in red and black are 10-12-1. “And about four of those losses could have gone either way,” he said bluntly. Asked about the season so far, Parrott was quick to credit those around him. “The kids are fantastic,” he said. “We have great chemistry with this group. It was a group that was really looking for something, and I think they’ve eaten up what we’ve brought to the table.” In his first year with Northwest, Parrott is no stranger to the diamond. He played at Western, graduating in 1999 before beginning his college career at Spring Arbor University. When his playing days ended he went back to Western to teach, and coach…
Veteran Michigan Center baseball team doing just as expected so far By Mike Moore Staff Writer Michigan Center — There’s very little surprising about this start to the 2016 spring. In fact, as Michigan Center baseball coach Matt Desmarais spoke about his squad Thursday night, he admitted all the success his guys have enjoyed has been a couple years in the making. That certainly doesn’t mean the Cardinals aren’t enjoying it, though. “Gratifying so far for sure,” Desmarais said with a laugh. “This is a group with an awesome attitude. They had a great offseason and that’s translated into the year. They are a fun group to be around.” Twelve games into the season, Center had 11 wins. The lone loss was a 10-4 setback to a Bronson team that’s 14-1. And part of that 11-1 start is a 4-0 mark in the Cascades Conference the Cardinals are trying to win for a fourth year in a row. “Very high expectations coming in,” Desmarais said. “After a good season last year, we only lost two starters. We returned a great core of kids.” Desmarais said 11 letter-winners were back with the…
