Girls Basketball: JTV Sports Player of the Year

Khon capped four-year career by helping Northwest to 22-win season   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – He’d coached her for three years before this, keeping her on the varsity and inserting her to the starting lineup as a freshman. He watched her mature her game as a sophomore, then totally change it as a junior.   But as he spoke about Lexie Khon Tuesday afternoon, Northwest girls basketball coach Ryan Carroll said she blossomed into a totally new player in 2015-16 as a senior.   And he loved every second of it.   “The thing that stands out to me, or the difference this year, was the leadership role she took on,” Carroll said. “In the big moments, she was the go-to player. In the biggest games we played, she had her biggest games. That showed a lot about her.”   And was just part of the reason Khon was named JTV Sports Girls Basketball Player of the Year.   “Great teammate. A great leader. She’s so versatile,” Carroll added. “The first two years we had her she was our post player. The last few years she’s switched to a stretch player who played the perimeter.”  …

Girls Basketball: JTV Sports Coach of the Year

McDevitt turned 1-2 team into program record-setter with Columbia Central   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Brooklyn – Two losses in the first three games, and one by an eye-opening 51 points.   That certainly wasn’t the start Columbia Central girls basketball coach David McDevitt had drawn up when the winter began.   But with patience and coaching came improvement and success.   Record-setting success, to be exact.   And with that, McDevitt is the 2016 JTV Sports Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.   “It was a great year, really,” McDevitt said. “To me, one of the main things that stands out is the perseverance and character of the girls. We didn’t get off to a great start. We struggled to win our first game and then lost badly the next two.”   But they hung in.   McDevitt credits his girls and their desire to get better, but he had plenty to do with it.   As for the start, the Golden Eagles began the winter with a 47-45 victory against a Lumen Christi team that would end up winning six games all year.   The second game was a 56-26 loss to Northwest, followed by a…

A season of pride

Onsted falls in regional final, finishes 2015-16 with a 23-1 record   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Onsted – The difference between perfection and a season concluded was one, single loss.   On Wednesday night in a Class B regional final, the Onsted boys basketball team learned that lesson the hard way.   Unbeaten all winter, the Wildcats surrendered a fourth-quarter lead to River Rouge, eventually falling 49-44 at the Dundee High final.   “I really thought we played well defensively. We played well for three quarters,” coach Brad Maska said. “In the fourth they were able to limit possessions. They stalled a bit, and we weren’t able to get inside as much as we needed to. We also had some good looks, and we didn’t make as many shots as we needed.”   Onsted led 40-38 entering the fourth, but then found just four points in the final eight minutes.   River Rouge took the lead with a little more than two minutes remaining.   Onsted trailed 47-44 with 15 seconds remaining but couldn’t get a 3-pointer to drop.   Austin Davis, who scored 46 and 42 points in each of the past two games, respectively, was held…

Regional title on the line

Onsted looks to keep perfect record going strong in Class B regional final   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Onsted – Perfect, so far.   If the Onsted boys basketball team wants to keep the season that way, it will do so tonight in a Class B regional final.   And if the Wildcats do, they will snap a regional-title drought dating back to 1983.   “And truthfully, that’s not on the guys’ mind at all,” coach Brad Maska said. “Our guys are more focused on what happened in last year’s regional final when we lost to Milan. Our goal was to get back to this point and avenge that. We have that chance now.”   Onsted, 23-0, takes on River Rouge (21-3) at 6 p.m. tonight at Dundee.   “They have a good point guard, a very aggressive kid who can get to the rim,” Maska said. “They also have some size. They force turnovers. It’s an interesting match up. It comes down to taking care of the ball. They are going to try and get us to turn the ball over. If we can take care of it and force them into some contested shots, we’ll be…
