JTV Sports Jackson County Scoreboard March 26, 2024

Softball Lake Michigan 4, Jackson College 0: For the second consecutive day the Jets had game two postponed due to weather/darkness. Jackson College was only able to finish with one hit in game one of the doubleheader scheduled at home with Lake Michigan. Brooke Owen recorded the only hit for the Jets. Karly Manning pitched a one-hitter for Lake Michigan. Game two was halted in the third inning with Lake Michigan leading 1-0 following a storm in the Jackson area. Jackson College (5-8) is scheduled to travel to Marian University Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.  Men’s Golf Spring Arbor at Garn Invitational: Spring Arbor University finished fifth during the two-day tournament. Brady Krohn was the top player for the Cougars.  On Deck for March 27 College Athletic Events Softball Huntington at Spring Arbor (postponed due to weather)

JTV Sports Boys’ Basketball Player of The Year

Player of the Year Mekhi Wingfield, Concord, Senior:  Mekhi Wingfield is the 2024 JTV Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Wingfield was this season’s Big 8 Conference MVP and ended his career in 2nd place as the all-time leading scorer in Concord history. Wingfield averaged 25 points per game and led a young Concord team to a 12-0 conference record. Top 10 Players DeVonta Habern, Napoleon, Senior: DeVonta averaged 15 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals per game to lead the Napoleon Pirates to a district final appearance. Habern was named the Cascades Conference MVP this season and all-first team the last two seasons. He also set records for steals in a season and a career. He plans to play basketball at the collegiate level and is still undecided on a school. Luke Tropea, Lumen Christi, Junior: Luke Tropea led Lumen Christi to a 22-5 record and a regional championship this season. Lumen Christi had great wins this season including two over 20-4 Michigan Center, 20-4 Napoleon, 25-1 Laingsburg, and Riverview Gabriel Richard (who made the Final Four). College Athletic Events Softball Spring Arbor 7, Mt. Vernon 2: SAU scored six times in the fifth inning breaking open a close game. Key hits were a two-run single by Grace Lentz and a home run by Brooke Meeker. Emmalee Hamp scattered five hits earning the win on the mound for SAU.  Mt. Vernon 4, Spring Arbor 0: Emmalee Hamp recorded the only two hits for Spring Arbor in the loss.  Jackson College 9, Kalamazoo Valley 8: Carmyn Mackenzie singled in the winning run for JC in the road win. The Jets scored five times in the second inning including a two-run double by Brooke Owen. Sydney Schuler hit a home run in the sixth inning scoring two runs. Addison Bobbio and Mackenzie each recorded three hits for JC. The Jets (5-6 overall) host Lake Michigan College Tuesday with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.  Baseball Spring Arbor 17, Goshen 9: The Cougars scored 16 runs in the final five innings of the game. JTV Sport Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year

Player of the Year Maddux Locke, Springport, Senior: The senior improved from her all-state performance as a junior scoring 21.6 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, and 6 steals per game in 2023-2024. Locke was named as the Big Eight Conference MVP for this season and averaged 18.4 points per game and nearly 6 steals in four years at Springport at the varsity level. She plans to play basketball at Lawrence Tech University next fall.  Top 10 Players Ashley Weller, Northwest, Senior: Weller was the top scorer for the Mounties this season with 17.5 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 assists per game for Northwest. She was named as the Player of the Year in the Interstate-8 Conference and plans to play basketball a Spring Arbor University next fall.  Mara Mitchell, Northwest, Senior: Mitchell went over the 1,000-point plateau at the end of her senior season. She averaged 15.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals per game for the Mounties. Mitchell will attend Ferris State University in the fall to play basketball.  Kate Starkey, Grass Lake, Junior: Starkey was the MVP of the Cascades Conference this season leading the Warriors to a conference title. College Athletic Events Softball Marian 8, Spring Arbor 0: Emmalee Hamp recorded two of the three hits for SAU in the road loss.  Marian 7, Spring Arbor 4: Spring Arbor jumped out to a 3-0 lead only to fall in the second game of the doubleheader. Summer Ambler finished with three hits and three RBIs and Grace Lentz added three hits for Spring Arbor (14-9 overall, 6-4 Crossroads League).   Track and Field Spring Arbor at IWU Polar at Indiana Wesleyan: Josiah Fitch won the hammer throw for Spring Arbor with a toss of 50.52 meters and Chase Hobson of SAU finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:47.

College Athletic Events Softball Spring Arbor 10, St. Francis 0: Emma Lee finished with three hits and three RBIs and Brooke Meeker added two hits and two runs batted in for SAU (14-7).  Spring Arbor 4, St. Francis 0: Elena Jones earned the pitching win striking out three batters and allowing four hits for SAU. Emmalee Hamp hit a home run and knocked in a pair of runs for SAU.  Bowling Spring Arbor Women at NAIA National Tournament: Spring Arbor defeated Concordia 4-2 in Baker games in the second round advancing to the next one in the elimination bracket. SAU averaged 195 per Baker game in the win. They lost to St. Xavier in the next round, 4-3.  NAIA Bowling: Spring Arbor University bowlers Kayla Tafanelli and Caleb Tate were selected to the NAIA All-American third team. It is the first all-American selection for Tafanelli and the third consecutive honor for Tate, a Jackson High School graduate. On Deck for March 23 College Athletic Events Softball Spring Arbor at Marian (DH) 1 p.m.  Track and Field Spring Arbor at IWU Polar (Indiana Wesleyan) 10 a.m.
